Softball uses eighth-inning errors in Game 1 and grand slam in Game 2 to sweep Georgetown

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville made Georgetown pay for two eighth-inning errors in Game 1 and used a grand slam by Hailey Szpila in Game 2 to propel a sweep of the Tigers today at Veterans Memorial Park, 5-4, 9-2.

The Lady Tigers' bats were relatively quiet compared to their last eight games, collecting 12 hits in the two games. But they got hits when they needed it in putting away Georgetown (26-10, 9-5 MSC) in the first two of a four-game weekend series.

The teams will be back at it again tomorrow at noon for a doubleheader, but not before an 11:30 a.m. Senior Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park.

CU (29-7, 16-0 MSC) got a couple of complete games from Neely Quint (14-4) and Morgan Gailor (12-3), Quint pitching a seven-hitter and Gailor giving up four.

GAME 1 – Campbellsville 5, Georgetown 4

Campbellsville took a 3-1 lead into the fifth on a first-inning RBI-double by Tori Humphrey and a two-run homer to center by fellow freshman Mia Aldridge in the fourth.

But Georgetown scored two runs in the fifth and after the Lady Tigers added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Aldridge, things got interesting.

Quint walked the leadoff batter in the seventh and allowed a single to Katie Young. Quint coaxed a couple of fly ball outs and loaded the bases with her second free pass of the inning.

It looked like the game would be over when Jacqueline Roof scooped up a grounder at short and flipped it the Brittany Rippy at second. But Rippy bobbled the toss and Georgetown plated the tying runs on the play.

Georgetown loaded the bases in the top of the eight on successive hits by Allison Watson, Katie Young and Hanna Howes. But Cassidy Janes grounded into a 6-2-5 double play to end the threat and set up the bottom half of the inning.

Roof reached on Young's dropped fly in center, and then with one out, Humphrey picked up her second hit of the game. Roof was able to score on Chaselyn Allgeier's wild throw to the plate.

Aldridge and Humphrey had two of the five hits, with Madison Mudd picking up the other.

CU left three on base and Georgetown stranded eight.

GAME 2 – Campbellsville 9, Georgetown 2

After Georgetown took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-single by Sydney Goyette, Campbellsville's bats came alive.

Rebecca Miler scored the tying run with a single in the second inning and then Szpila capped off a five-run frame in the third with her fifth home run of the season, a shot off the scoreboard in right center.

Brittany Rippy and Madison Mudd singled and Mia Aldridge drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Szpila.

Georgetown picked up a run in the fourth on Goyette's home run.

Campbellsville then topped off its offense with three runs in the sixth, two off a home run by Jacqueline Roof. Tori Humphrey was hit by a pitch and scored on Alexia Smith's double.

CU seven hits were spread out among seven players, with two homers producing six runs.
