MASON, Ohio — After play was suspended last night due to inclement weather, the Tigers had a doubleheader on Thursday between Ecclesia College and Bluefield College, where a few mid-week starters earned wins and CU parked five total home runs in the two contests.
Campbellsville won game one in NCCAA Baseball Pool Play action over the Royals in eight innings, 8-2, and turned right around to run-rule Bluefield College, 12-2, in game two.
Officially only three hours of action, it took 17 hours to get a final between Ecclesia and CU. The Tigers led 6-1 before play was suspended thanks to a two-run homer by
David Montoya and grandslam by
Romello Carbuccia.
Clayton Carrico relieved
Kirby Broadbent on the hill and tossed five innings, allowed three hits and no runs to pick up the win.
In game two vs. Bluefield,
Nick Johnston started on the mound and went five innings, allowing only two earned runs while striking out four. It was the big bats of
Brett Hamilton, Carbuccia and
Hunter Christensen delivering the long balls, as Christensen belted a two-run shot to complete the run-rule victory.
The Tigers will now play two games on Friday starting at 10 a.m. ET vs. Alice Lloyd. CU will turn around and play at 8 p.m. against top-seeded Oklahoma Baptist. Both games are played at Prasco Park with free admission and free food available.
Game one: Campbellsville 8, Ecclesia 2
After the Tigers put up a six-spot in the second inning, CU came right back this morning after a 30-minute delay to go ahead by seven, 8-1, as Daniel O'Brien walked five guys in the inning and CU scored two of those. Garrett Jones got out the jam for Ecclesia with a bases-loaded inning-ending double play.
CU was blanked the rest of the way but it was Carrico tossing the bulk of the innings and picking up him first win as a Tiger.
Game two: Campbellsville 12, Bluefield 2
After 25 minutes in-between games, the Tigers kept the offense going and put up a three-spot in the first. It was
Romello Carbuccia and
Marlor Villafana delivering RBI singles to put CU ahead, 3-0.
In the fourth, Bluefield got on the board after a walk came around to score but that was the only blemish for Johnston. The offensive picked him up, though. Cu answered in the bottom half of the fourth, as a leadoff hit-by-pitch scored on a
Matt Valdez fielder's choice.
In the fifth, the Tigers plated five runs to break the game open. It all started with a leadoff walk and was capped with a three-run homer by Hamilton. CU scored two more unearned runs after two of the three errors for Bluefield allowed runs.
In the sixth, Carbuccia smashed a solo shot to left field for his team-leading ninth long ball of the season. In the seventh, Christensen pinch-hit for
Riley Joyce and hit a no-doubter into the rain to give CU the victory – his second home run of the season.
