COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Campbellsville women's volleyball team moved to 6-0 to start the season after beating Webber International University, 3-0, and College of Coastal Georgia, 3-2, to finish the NAIA Southeastern Challenge on Saturday.
Katie Johnson led the Lady Tigers in both matches with 11 kills against the Warriors (5-2) and 18 kills in the five-set thriller over the Mariners (1-5).
Jessie Pendleton compiled 42 digs over the two matches, while
Maliyah Tela finished with 83 assists.
Campbellsville 3, Webber International 0
The Lady Tigers stretched their winning streak to start the season to five games with a 3-0 victory over Webber International. Campbellsville came out strong and scored the first five points in the first set.
Webber International battled backed within two points, but the Warriors could only make it 9-7 after the Lady Tigers stretched out their lead. Campbellsville rattled off an 8-3 run to grab a 17-10 edge, which was its largest in the first set until the very end.
The Lady Tigers continued to hit efficiently as they took the first set, 25-17.
Campbellsville's efficient offense continued in the second set as it hit .407 en route to a 25-16 win in the set. The Lady Tigers took another early lead, first at 4-0 and then they stretched out the lead to 7-1.
Over the first two sets, Campbellsville never trailed as it won the set to take a 2-0 lead overall. The Lady Tigers nine-point lead at the end of the second set was its largest lead for the entire match.
Another quick spurt gave Campbellsville the early 3-0 advantage and the Lady Tigers pulled out to a 9-5 advantage, which was its largest lead in the third set.
Campbellsville held the lead for most of the set, until Webber International tied the match at 20. Both teams battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the set with the score playing within a two-point window until the end.
The Lady Tigers rallied from its first deficit of the match, 23-22, to win the third set 26-24 and sweep its first match of the day.
Campbellsville completed the match with a .363 hitting percentage, while holding the Warriors to .132 on offense.
Johnson finished with a match-high 11 kills, while Fonseca had 10 kills and six blocks. The Lady Tigers recorded nine total blocks in the contest
Campbellsville 3, Coastal Georgia 2
Campbellsville nor Coastal Georgia gave an inch to the start the first set with the largest lead for both teams being one-point. The Lady Tigers never trailed until the Mariners scored back-to-back points to go ahead 8-7.
However, Campbellsville rattled off four-straight points and took a three-point lead over Coastal Georgia. The Lady Tigers held their lead the remainder of the set and won, 25-22.
Campbellsville picked up where it left off to start the second as it took an early 5-2 lead. After the Mariners tied the match at six, the Lady Tigers went back ahead and continued to stay out front, stretching their lead to 19-15.
Coastal Georgia came storming back and tied the match at 19 and took their first lead of the set on the ensuing rally. Campbellsville tied the match, 20-20, but the Mariners closed the set on a 5-1 run to win the second set, 25-21.
The dropped set during the Lady Tigers' second match of the day was their first lost set of the season, which occurred during their sixth match of the season.
Campbellsville looked to rebound in the third set, and it went ahead 8-4 after Coastal Georgia scored the first two points. The Lady Tigers stretched their lead to as many six, but the Mariners found another late set rally.
With Campbellsville leading 16-10, Coastal Georgia cut into its deficit and tied the match at 22 and then again at 23. The Mariners took a 2-1 lead in the match after scoring the final three points to win the third set, 25-23.
The Lady Tigers came out strong looking to tie the match in the fourth set, jumping out to 9-3 lead. Campbellsville did not let off the gas as it stretched its lead to 16-4. The Lady Tigers pulled away – with its largest lead at 20-5 -- and won the fourth set, 25-12, to tie the match and force the decisive fifth set.
Coastal Georgia benefited from five Campbellsville errors to start the fifth set as the Mariners took a 6-0 lead. The Lady Tigers did not go away as they counter with their own 5-0 run to pull within a point. The Mariners held a narrow 8-6 lead at the turn.
Campbellsville rallied to tie the match 10, and it later took a 12-11 lead after a kill from Johnson. Coastal Georgia kept the match within reach and tied it at 14. The final set was pushed all the way to 18-16, but the Lady Tigers did not relinquish the lead as they won the final set and the match.
Neither team ended the match hitting over .200 with Campbellsville hitting .156 and the Mariners hit .195 overall.
Johnson recorded a team-high 14 kills for the Lady Tigers, while Ehize Omoghibo notched a match-high 22 kills.
Campbellsville begins Mid-South Conference action on Tuesday night as it travels to University of the Cumberlands for a 7 p.m. ET start from Williamsburg, Ky.
