CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. —
Julia Fonseca delivered 19 kills and Campbellsville University women's volleyball sealed its third straight sweep over a conference opponent, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22.
Julia Fonseca came to play tonight…. The junior from Sau Paulo, Brazil finished with 10 kills in the first set and she kept the pedal to the floor the rest of the night. The 19 kills were one shy of her career-high set last season vs. University of the Cumberlands on Sept. 20.
She was flanked with 12 kills by
Maria Coelho and six from
Cassidy Mull.
Maliyah Tela once again put up impressive passing numbers with 43 assists.
In that first set, UPIKE (5-12, 0-4 MSC) came out on fire and took a 7-3 lead but that didn't last long. Fonseca compiled seven of the next 10 points for CU and the Lady Tigers (11-2, 4-2 MSC) went on an 11-2 run to take control of the opening frame.
In addition to Fonseca, the Lady Tigers put up 19 kills as a team – which is a season-high in one set.
The Bears came out fighting for their lives in the second set but could not hold Campbellsville down. UPIKE led 10-9 but a 7-1 Campbellsville run put the Lady Tigers ahead, 16-11 forcing a Pikeville timeout.
Out of the break, the Bears answered the call with a 7-2 run to knot the set at 18-all forcing coach
Amy Zink to burn a timeout. But Campbellsville answered right back by doubling up the Bears with an 8-4 run to take set two, 25-22.
CU finished with 17 kills and hit .286 in the second frame compared to 13 kills and .167 for UPIKE.
The Bears had a chance in the third to spoil Campbellsville's sweet. Pikeville led multiple times throughout the set -- 9-4, 17-13 and 21-18 – but the Lady Tigers rallied when needed.
CU erased the first lead with a 7-2 run and later a 3-0 run forcing Pikeville to call timeouts in both instances. The home crowd then got behind Campbellsville the final few points, as the Lady Tigers finished the night on a 7-1 run.
Overall, the Lady Tigers finished with their third-highest kill total of the year with 50. UPIKE compiled only 29 kills – it's fourth-lowest of the year.
Campbellsville will now hit the road for eight matches before returning to the friendly confines of the Powell Athletic Center. The Lady Tigers travel to the Olivet Nazarene Tournament this weekend to face Columbia College, Indiana Wesleyan, University of Saint Francis and Indiana Tech.
