Twenty-seven-day layoff comes to an end for Football at Bethel on Saturday afternoon

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – After 27 days away from game action, the Campbellsville football team returns to action Saturday afternoon as it travels to Bethel University for a 2:30 p.m. ET kickoff from McKenzie, Tennessee.

Fans can tune into the CU Sports Network, 88.7 The Tiger, starting at 2 p.m. ET with The Tiger Tailgate Show. In addition, live video is being provided by Bethel University.

The Tigers had their official bye week this past week, and with two Mid-South Conference Sun Division opponents scheduled for week three and week four of the season; Hurricane Irma altered the Tigers schedule. Campbellsville's game against Warner University on Sept. 9 was cancelled and the Tigers Sept. 16 contest against Ave Maria University was postponed and rescheduled for Oct. 21.

This weekend the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) members will once again wear the traditional Coach To Cure MD logo patch on the sidelines, and college football fans will be asked to donate to research projects supported by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), the largest, most comprehensive nonprofit organization in the U.S. focused entirely on Duchenne.

Campbellsville is currently 2-0 on the season and won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2011 after beating Point University, 51-33, in week two. In the game, Hunter Brown threw for 380 yards and five touchdown passes. Zerric Willis caught three of the touchdown passes, while Kendon Young caught two.

On the ground, Keanu Young had seven rushers for 35 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Skyhawks, while Wade Holtsclaw recorded 74 rushing yards on 12 touches. The Tiger defense forced three interceptions, led by Marcus McCants with two picks for a combined 51 return yards.

Campbellsville has compiled 381.5 passing yards per game, which ranks second in the NAIA and first in the Mid-South Conference. Brown also leads the nation in passing with 381.5 yards a game and he ranks fifth with 378.5 total yards a game. Kendon Young has averaged 15 points per game – which leads the nation – with five receiving touchdowns over the first two games of the season.

Darius Moore has paced the Campbellsville defense with 23 total tackles in two games, while BJ Pelt and McCants each have recorded two interceptions this season for the Tigers.

Bethel comes into the weekend with a record of 1-3 and after winning its season opener; the Wildcats have dropped its last three games. Bethel's last game was called with 2:20 left in the second quarter after lightning lingered around the Waleska, Georgia area and the Wildcats suffered a 33-0 loss at No. 3 Reinhardt University. In the game, Bethel could generate just eight yards of total offense is less than a half of play.

Sam Castronova has led the Wildcat offense with 666 passing yards and he has chipped in with 51 rushing yards. Taye Davis notched the lone rushing touchdown of the season for Bethel to go along with 224 rushing yards.

Anthony Patrick anchors the Wildcats' defense with 32 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Bethel has recorded seven interceptions as a team this season, where Demetrice Gilbert leads the way with three picks in four games.

Last season, Campbellsville suffered a 59-53 loss to Bethel on homecoming. However, the Tigers are 6-0 against the Wildcats in games played at Wildcat Stadium in McKenzie, Tenn.

The Tigers are seeking the program's 150th victory as Campbellsville has compiled a record of 149-163-1 all-time. If the Tigers played their original third game of the season on Sept. 9 against Warner and were victorious, the 150th victory would have come on the same date of the program's first victory in 1989.

Kickoff on Saturday is set for 2:30 p.m. ET from Wildcat Stadium.

More information about Coach To Cure MD:
Coach To Cure MD began in 2008 with more than 200 schools and 2,675 coaches involved. Ten years later, that effort has expanded to 620 different schools and more than 11,350 coaches wearing the logo patch on the sidelines and participating in Coach To Cure MD events – a growth of more than 325 percent.

Football fans can help support the fight to end Duchenne by either going online to CoachtoCureMD.org or by texting the word CURE to 50555 to make a $10 donation in honor of this year's anniversary.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed during childhood, primarily affecting boys of all races and cultures. People with Duchenne develop progressive muscle weakness that eventually causes loss of mobility, wheelchair dependency, and a decline in respiratory and cardiac function. Currently, there is no cure for Duchenne. But thanks to Coach To Cure MD and the work of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, there is hope.

Ten years ago, few people in America knew about Duchenne and fewer still had reason to hope that any treatment for the lethal genetic disorder was on the horizon. But thanks in part to college football coaches, awareness of the disorder is at an all-time high and new treatments are in the pipeline – including two recently approved therapies – giving optimism for the families battling this progressive muscle disorder.
