Young's career day, Bates' field goal and Goodman's touchdown leads Tigers past Bethel in overtime

McKENZIE, TENN. — Campbellsville's defense stopped Bethel University on fourth and one to open overtime and Chantz Goodman scored the game-winning touchdown to secure the Tigers' 43-37 victory.

Campbellsville (3-0, 1-0 MSC Bluegrass) went down in the fourth quarter by 10 points, 37-27, but the Tigers scored 16 unanswered points to pull the come-from-behind win.

After Bethel (1-4, 0-1 MSC Bluegrass) went ahead by the 10 points, the Tigers wasted their first possession of the fourth quarter with a Bradley Bates missed field goal – which was the second of the day after a blocked kick was returned earlier in the game. But the senior from Campbellsville, Ky. would make up for that in a big way.

The Tiger defense forced the Wildcats to punt on the ensuing drive, setting up a Wade Holtsclaw 21-yard touchdown – his two of the day. On the next drive, Bethel got possession with 4:30 left and both teams with all three timeouts. CU burned all three and the Wildcats needed just one more first down to seal the victory but Campbellsville got the break it needed.

Taye Davis, who rushed for 63 yards in the Wildcat Formation today, needed three yards to seal the victory but the snap sailed over his head and BJ Pelt was there to recover for Campbellsville.

With 1:37 on the clock in regulation and Campbellsville starting on the Bethel 49-yard line, the Tigers needed only a field goal to send the game into overtime. On second down, Hunter Brown found Keanu Young for a 32-yard hookup – which sent a Tiger over the 200-yard receiving mark for only the second time in program history. CU had first and 10 on the Bethel 17-yardline but the Tigers put the fate of the game on the shoulders of senior Bradley Bates. The All-American place kicker stepped up when coach Perry Thomas called his name and drilled a 26-yard field goal to knot the score at 37 with 25 ticks left.

In overtime, Campbellsville won the toss and selected to go on defense first. With both teams getting the opportunity on offense from the 25-yard line, the Tigers wanted to know what exactly they needed to do once they gained possession.

It was the defense who stepped up in a big way, though. Bethel held the advantage with time of possession (33 minutes to 27) but the Tigers' front line stopped the fourth and one quarterback-keeper by Sam Castronova.

Justin Manning led the Tigers with 16 tackles – 10 solo, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. Khalil Baker also pitched in double-digit tackles with 11.

On CU's ensuing possession, three-straight rushes set up the Goodman game-winner -- a 20-yard scamper breaking multiple tackles on the way. The rushing attack made the difference for CU's offense today, as Goodman rushed for a career-high 121 yards on 12 attempts and one touchdown. Holtsclaw finished just five yards from the century mark with 95 yards and a pair of scores.

Keanu Young had a monster game for the Tigers with a career-high 11 catches and 200 yards, including a long of 54-yard reception, and the one touchdown.

Hunter Brown finished throwing for 347 yards on 21-of-39 passing with two touchdowns.
