CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. —
Andrew Smith was dominant with 21 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds to lead Campbellsville men's basketball to its first Mid-South Conference victory of the year, 66-58.
The Tigers (15-5, 1-4 MSC) were out-shot by Shawnee State (10-10, 1-4 MSC) in a big way but two more 3-pointers and eight more free throws proved to pay off for CU down the stretch. The Bears hit 46 percent (22-of-48) from the floor, while CU hit 21-of-60 (35 percent).
Campbellsville nailed six 3s overall, with three of them coming within the first five-plus minutes of the game to flip a four-point deficit into a four-point lead.
Shawn Johnson and
Duke Robinson nailed consecutives triples before Smith capped the quick 9-0 run with 15:12 left in the first half and CU leading, 12-8.
CU held the Bears scoreless for almost three minutes and ended up taking its largest lead of the half, 22-13, with 10:14 remaining.
Shawnee State responded quickly by going on a 11-2 run over the span of two minutes, cutting the CU lead to one, 25-24.
Simpson Anderson lit a spark for CU at the end of the half with a 3 and the starting a 9-3 run, giving Campbellsville a 34-27 lead at intermission.
Starting the second period, Robinson made 1-of-2 free throws to extend CU's lead to eight but Shawnee State went on a 16-5 run flipping an eight-point deficit into a four-point lead with 12:34 left, 43-39.
Then it was back to Campbellsville. CU held the Bears scoreless for almost five minutes and went on an 11-0 run to regain a seven-point advantage, 50-43.
The Bears were able to whittle that lead to three, 50-47, with 6:31 left but Campbellsville answered right back with a quick 6-0 run. With 47 seconds left, Shawnee State cut the lead to six once again, but it was too little too late for the Bears to pull the upset.
Behind Smith's 21 points,
Tim Coleman pitched in 13 with seven of those coming from the free throw line.
Fredrick Moore led the Bears with 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Campbellsville will now hit the road again next week, as the Tigers travel to No. 2 Lindsey Wilson on Thursday, Jan. 25. CU ends the road trip at Cumberland University on Saturday, Jan. 27 and at No. 5 Georgetown College on Thursday, Feb. 1.
