CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Top five matchups in the NAIA are hard to come by in the regular season and today's Mid-South Conference rivalry between No. 3 Campbellsville and No. 4 Shawnee State did not disappoint.
The Bears (18-3, 5-0 MSC) entered the Powell Athletic Center and won their fourth straight over the Lady Tigers, 73-63. Campbellsville falls to 18-3 overall and 4-1 in the MSC – two of the three CU losses have come against Top 5 teams.
The difference maker today, though, was an ice cold ending to the final five minutes for CU. Trailing 61-56,
Madison Kaiser delivered her second 3-pointer of the day cutting the Shawnee State lead to two. But from there on out, Campbellsville missed its next six shots and the Bears finished the day on a 14-4 run. CU hit 2-of-8 in the final five minutes.
It was a paint battle all afternoon, as
Jordan Doram and
Alexus Calhoun battled with Shawnee State's Madison Ridout. Along with teammate Bailey Cummins, Ridout led all scorers with 18 points, while Doram scored 16 for CU and Calhoun had 10.
The Lady Tigers struggled from the floor, hitting 37 percent (25-of-67), while the Bears hit 51 percent (27-of-53). SSU also out-shot the Lady Tigers form 3-point land, hitting 6-of-17 compared to 2-of-8 for CU.
A slow offensive start was quickly recovered by the Lady Tigers as they held the Bears scoreless for the final five minutes of the first quarter and went on a 6-0 run ending the period tied, 12-12.
Shawnee State eventually ended the scoring drought to regain a 14-12 lead. With 5:36 left in the second, Kaiser gave the Lady Tigers the lead back, 19-17, with her first of two 3s. CU pushed its lead to 20-17 but the Bears answered once again with a quick 6-0 run.
Calhoun, who scored nine points in the first half, tied the game at 27-all with 1:34 left. SSU answered right back with its first 3 of the day, as Cummins put the Bears ahead, 30-27.
Madison Stewart pulled CU within one, 30-29, with a jumper as the buzzer barked at halftime.
In the third quarter, Shawnee State out-scored CU 13-4 and pushed its lead to double figures for the first time with 3:22 left. Doram put CU on her back and led the offensive comeback with a 9-3 run by the Lady Tigers to end the frame trailing, 54-50.
In the fourth, Kaiser brought CU back to within two points with 5:26 remaining but the Bears ended the game on a 14-4 run.
Campbellsville collected 34 of its 63 points in the paint as Shawnee State was right behind with 32 itself.
The Lady Tigers will now travel to rival Lindsey Wilson College for the Battle of Highway 55 on Thursday, Jan. 25. Tipoff of the doubleheader will start at 7 p.m. ET in Columbia, Ky.
