LEBANON, Tenn. – Campbellsville's women's basketball team shot lights out in first 20 minutes of action as it shot 69.2 percent from the floor and 88.9 percent from three en route to an 82-63 victory over Cumberland University on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Tigers (20-3, 6-1 Mid-South Conference) started the game shooting just 2-for-7 from the floor, but closed the first half making 16-of-19 shots – highlighted by going 9-for-10 in the second quarter.
Madison Kaiser led all scorers with a career-high 19 points against the Phoenix (15-7, 4-3 MSC). Kaiser finished 7-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-4 beyond the arc.
Jordan Doram chipped in with 15 points and
Madison Faulkner recorded 14 points, with 12 coming in the second half.
Lauren Turner notched six assists and
Savannah Gregory finished with a career-high five assists.
After back-to-back turnovers to start the game and the Phoenix scoring the first basket of the day, Doram strung together five-straight for the Lady Tigers to take an early 5-2 advantage just over two minutes into regulation.
Both teams shot lights out in the first 10 minutes of the ball game with Campbellsville shooting 56.3 percent and Cumberland was 66.7 percent from the field. However, a pair of three pointers from Kaiser gave the Lady Tigers a 23-17 lead heading into the second quarter. Cumberland only scored three points in the final three minutes of the opening stanza, which came from Ant'Treasia Patton.
The Lady Tiger offense continued to click on all cylinders in the second quarter as they went 9-for-10 from the floor in the period en route to taking a 47-33 lead into the half. Despite Cumberland shooting 60 percent in the first half, Campbellsville used a 7-0 run late in the second quarter to create some separation.
After starting the game making two of their first seven shots, Campbellsville closed the first half making 16-of-19 shots en route to its best shooting half of the season. The three-ball also pushed the Lady Tigers ahead by 12 points at the break after they made 8-of-9 three-pointers. Kaiser led all scorers in the first half with 14 on 5-fo-5 shooting, including 4-for-4 from deep.
The Phoenix scored the first basket of the second half, but Faulkner scored the next eight points and Cumberland went nearly four minutes without a point as the Lady Tigers pushed their lead to 55-38. Offense for both teams went quite as just two points – both from the Phoenix – were scored in 2:45.
Campbellsville's 3:45 scoreless drought came to an end after
Madison Stewart knocked down a jumper from the left elbow. After scoring over 20 points in each of the first two quarters, the Lady Tigers scored just 15 in the third quarter, but they held the Phoenix to just nine points. Campbellsville shot 42.9 percent in the quarter compared to just 27.3 percent from Cumberland.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers extended their lead to 24 points – their largest of the day – after scoring seven-straight points to start the quarter, but the Phoenix countered with the next five points. Campbellsville closed out the game and earned an 82-63 victory over Cumberland. The 82 points from the Lady Tigers are the second-most the Phoenix have given up all season after is surrender 83 points to Freed-Hardeman University earlier this season.
Campbellsville ended the game shooting 58.8 percent from the field and season-best 62.5 percent from three. Cumberland was an even 50 percent from the floor.
Carli Codner-Pinto led the Phoenix with 13 points off the bench and Janisha Lindsey recorded a game-high nine assists.
The Lady Tigers are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 1 on the road against Georgetown College at 6 p.m. ET.
