No. 8 Cumberland scores three goals in second period to run past Lady Tiger soccer

LEBANON, Tenn. — Cumberland University scored three goals in the second period and the Phoenix took down Lady Tiger soccer on Sunday afternoon, 4-1.

The loss drops Campbellsville to 1-2 inside Mid-South Conference play and 7-5 overall on the season. The eighth-ranked Phoenix improve to 11-1 overall and 2-0 inside conference play to sit atop the standings.

Today, though, it was all Cumberland. The Lady Tigers kept the contest scoreless until the 34thminute but Autumn Copeland uncorked the tie with her sixth goal of the year off an assist from Emma Campbell.

Cumberland went ahead 2-0 with 59 seconds remaining in the first half after the Mid-South Conference's goal leader Rebecca Holloway netted her 16thgoal of the year.

After one period, the Phoenix had a narrow edge over Campbellsville in shots, 7-6.

Campbellsville was able to whittle the lead down to one after Molly Hall capitalized. Lakin Walls found her just outside the 18-yard box and Hall finished left-footed to the back post for her fifth goal of the year.

But the final five minutes was the difference maker. Cumberland scored twice in the final few minutes to end the Lady Tigers' hopes of a comeback. Holloway found teammate Sarah Haddock with a long free kick into the box for her first goal of the year. Then with just 20 seconds left, the Phoenix put the exclamation point on the contest after Haley Stevens scored from just outside the six-yard box.

Overall, the Phoenix out-shot Campbellsville 11-5 in the second period and 18-11 overall. Katelyn Young played all 90 minutes in goal and registered seven saves. Her counterpart Ashley Kambeitz finished with six saves and allowed the one Hall score early in the second period.

Campbellsville now gets back on the pitch next week as Life University comes to town on Saturday, Oct. 13. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET at Finley Stadium.
