COLUMBIA, Ky. – Five Fighting Tiger football players were named to the All Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division teams, the Mid-South Conference announced Thursday morning.
Juniors
Marcus McCants and
Kendon Young were named to the First Team with juniors
Trey Binder and
Terence Stewart along with senior
Dillon Day receiving Second Team honors.
The defensive back from Seffner, Fla., McCants led the Tigers with 40 solo tackles on the season with 40 and added 28 assisted tackles to finish second on the team with 68 total tackles. McCants also finished 2018 with a sack, an interception and a forced fumble.
The hometown wide receiver from Campbellsville, Young was the offensive leader for the Tigers in 2018. His 1,233 all-purpose yards almost doubled the second-best CU player in that category. In fact, Young's team-leading 886 receiving yards was more than any other player's all-purpose total. Adding 250 yards rushing yards were good enough for second on the team and he also added 97 yards on kick return to average 123.3 all-purpose yards per game.
Binder and Stewart the linemen from Georgetown, Ky. and Louisville, Ky. respectively started all 10 games for the Tigers each. CU averaged 128.9 rushing yards per game and 3.2 yards per carry behind the two Second Team linemen. Both players played on the punting unit as well where only one punt was blocked all season as well as Binder running the ball on a faked punt for 11 yards and a first down at Georgetown, his hometown team.
CU's starting nose guard from Hickory, Ky., Day also started all 10 games for the Tigers, recording 42 total tackles with 34 assisted tackles and eight solo tackles. He also got in the backfield for 2.5 tackles for a loss and a half a sack for the CU defense.
The individual awards and all-conference teams are selected by a vote of the Bluegrass Division's coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Thirty-one players earned first team all-conference honors and 29 were selected second team all-conference as voted on by the coaches. Ties for all-conference teams were not broken.
Bethel's (Tenn.) Sam Castronova is the Craig Mullins MSC Bluegrass Offensive Player of the Year, while Lindsey Wilson's (Ky.) Trent Mueller is the MSC Bluegrass Defensive Player of the Year.
