Bethel shocks Tigers with late goal in 85th minute; CU's season ends in NCCAA Pool Play

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Campbellsville men's soccer came up short once again in the NCCAA Soccer Championships late last night as the Tigers fell to Bethel College 2-1 ending their season.

Bethel went 2-0 inside pool play, while Campbellsville and Ottawa both went 1-1. The tiebreaker came down to goals allowed and the Tigers allowed three compared to two for the Ottawa Spirit, therefor ending CU's season with a 12-8 record.

Campbellsville controlled the first half for the most part, tallying five shots with three on target. Troy Walters netted his 10thgoal of the year in the 11thminute to put CU ahead 1-0.

Walters had another chance in the 14thbut two straight shots were denied with a pair of beautiful saves by Bethel's goalkeeper, Andres Arce.

That was the final time Campbellsville threatened in the opening frame.

Bethel evened the match at 1-all in the 33rdminute. Richard Ontiveros found Jose Barquin with a. cross into the box and the Pilots started to control possession after that.

The second half was physical for both teams. A total of 10 yellow cards were handed out, including six in the second period – four on CU and two on Bethel.

The Pilots took advantage of a defensive breakdown in the 85thminute as Isaac Nunez beat Owen Stott to put Bethel ahead late, 2-1.

Coach Adam Preston went to a third striker in the final minutes, but Nathaniel Fonda has a pair of shots miss and CU didn't record an attempt in the final five minutes of play.

The Tigers fall in the pool play rounds for the sixth time, as CU is still looking for that first semifinal appearance in NCCAA Championship play.

Ottawa will play top-seeded Southwestern Christian, while Bethel plays two-seeded Grace College in the semifinal rounds on Friday night at Austin-Tindall Soccer Complex. The winners will play in the title match on Saturday at 7:30.
