POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – The top seed in the NCCAA Championship, Biola University looked the part Friday morning as they swept Campbellsville women's volleyball in the final match of Pool Play.
The Eagles won the sets by the scores of 25-22, 25-10 and 25-16 to eliminate the Lady Tigers chances of reaching the semi-finals as Biola and Southwestern Christian will advance out of Pool A into the bracket stage.
CU struggled on the attack, hitting for a 0.28 average in the match and recording only 26 kills compared to the 44 for Biola. The Lady Tigers were also credited with 23 attacking errors in the match, nine in each the second and third sets after only five in the first set.
Seniors Katie Johnson and
Maria Coelho each had six kills, which was the most for any CU player but the pair did not hit for great percentages as Johnson hit .074 and Coelho hit at a .105 percentage.
With the loss Friday morning, the season will come to a close for the Lady Tigers with a final record of 25-11. CU earned an outright second place finish in the Mid-South Conference regular season and finished as the MSC tournament runner-up after losing to Lindsey Wilson in the championship match.
Individually, the Lady Tigers had three attackers finish with over 300 kills in Coelho, Johnson and freshman
Sonia Flendrich.
Coelho's 393 kills were the second-highest season total in her career behind when she had 467 kills in 2016 in eight more matches. She averaged 3.17 kills per set, which was her highest average of her Campbellsville career. Coelho's career total of 1,415 will finish as the sixth highest total in Lady Tiger volleyball history.
Johnson finished with 339 kills on the season, her best total as a Lady Tiger as her total grew every season she was on campus. The same could be said about her kills per set as she finished at 2.63, again her highest total at CU.
