Lady Tigers escape MSC Tournament first round with five-set win over Shawnee State

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Campbellsville women's volleyball had to sweat out every point in their opening round victory over Shawnee State Thursday night.

The second seed Lady Tigers got all they could handle from the seven seed Bears as the match went five sets where CU needed to win sets three and four to advance.

Unsurprisingly, the team that had the better hitting percentage won the set as the Lady Tigers won the first 25-20, SSU won the second 25-22 and third 25-21 with CU winning the fourth big 25-15 and edging out the fifth 15-13.

On the attack, the lone All-Conference First Team member for the Lady Tigers, Maria Coelho, had herself a night in the opening round. Coelho recorded 17 kills and only four errors for a .289 hitting percentage to carry CU to the victory.

Setter Paige Merrick had a unique night for someone in her position on the court. The All-Conference Second Team member assisted on 45 of the 62 CU kills, also adding 10 digs for a double-double and recording eight kills, two away from a triple-double. Merrick's eight kills came with no errors to hit for a .667 percentage on the night.

Other attackers for the Lady Tigers with double-digit kills were Katie Johnson and Sonia Flendrich who had 13 and 12 respectively. Johnson also added 18 digs for a double-double of her own with Flendrich hitting a better percentage than Johnson at .161 for the match.

Campbellsville will have a quick turnaround for their semi-final match Friday afternoon against the winner of the match between Georgetown and Life. CU beat Life in both matches against the Running Eagles this season and split against Georgetown with both teams winning their home matches.

The semi-final will be played at 2:30 p.m. CT/3:30 p.m. ET with the championship match being played later at night at 7:30 p.m. CT/8:30 p.m. ET.
