GREENVILLE, S.C. – Five Fighting Tiger football players were named to the All-NCCAA teams, the NCCAA announced Friday afternoon.
Senior offensive lineman
John Chewning was the lone first team selection as fellow lineman
Trey Binder, receiver
Kendon Young, defensive lineman
Dillon Day and defensive back
Marcus McCants were named to the second team.
Four of the five CU players who made All-NCCAA teams also were named to the All Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division teams as Chewning was the only one who was left off.
Binder and Chewning the linemen from Georgetown, Ky. and Campbellsville, Ky. respectively started all 10 games for the Tigers each. CU averaged 128.9 rushing yards per game and 3.2 yards per carry behind the two Second Team linemen. Both players played on the punting unit as well where only one punt was blocked all season as well as Binder running the ball on a faked punt for 11 yards and a first down at Georgetown, his hometown team.
CU's starting nose guard from Hickory, Ky., Day also started all 10 games for the Tigers, recording 42 total tackles with 34 assisted tackles and eight solo tackles. He also got in the backfield for 2.5 tackles for a loss and a half a sack for the CU defense.
The defensive back from Seffner, Fla., McCants led the Tigers with 40 solo tackles on the season with 40 and added 28 assisted tackles to finish second on the team with 68 total tackles. McCants also finished 2018 with a sack, an interception and a forced fumble.
The hometown wide receiver from Campbellsville, Young was the offensive leader for the Tigers in 2018. His 1,233 all-purpose yards almost doubled the second-best CU player in that category. In fact, Young's team-leading 886 receiving yards was more than any other player's all-purpose total. Adding 250 yards rushing yards were good enough for second on the team and he also added 97 yards on kick return to average 123.3 all-purpose yards per game.
