Two tradition rich programs meet on Tuesday at Pikeville's Classic in Expo Center

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Two of the most successful programs in the NAIA Division I and Division II ranks meet on the hardwood at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Tuesday afternoon in Game 1 of the Pikeville Classic. 
 
No. 5 Lady Tiger Basketball faces the No. 7-ranked Marian University Knights at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 18. Fans can tune into the CU Sports Network, 88.7 The Tiger or CampbellsvilleTigers.com, for the broadcast from the Expo Center. 
 
Both programs have reached the national tournament a combined 31 times - 26 for Campbellsville and five for Marian. Marian won the national championship in 2014-15 and 2015-16 and is coming off a Final 16 appearance last season. 
 
Campbellsville is entering the week after winning five straight home games, including a come-from-behind win over West Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Knights enter the week after winning their last three, including a 67-46 win over Cumberland University last Friday night. In the Pikeville Classic this weekend, Campbellsville and Pikeville will swap opponents each day.

  • Campbellsville and Marian University are meeting for the second time in history.
  • The Lady Tigers won 91-57 on Jan. 25, 1980.

  • Statistics speaking, the Lady Tigers have the best rebounding team in program history with 46.9 rebounds per game.
  • CU has only averaged 40+ rebounds per game eight times since 2003-04.
  • In that span, the 2013-14 team averaged 43.9 rebounds per game and allowed 34.6 boards - good for a +9.3-rebound margin.
  • The Lady Tigers are allowing 33.9 rebounds per game - good for +13 rebound margin.
  • Madison Faulkner and Madison Stewart both average 5+ rebounds per game at 5.7 and 5.3, respectively.

Marian Knights Tradition:
  • Like Lady Tiger Basketball at the NAIA DI level, Marian University is one of the best programs at the D2 level.
  • The Knights won back-to-back national championships in the 2014-15 season and the 2015-16 year. Coach Katie Gearlds was named Coach of the Year in both seasons.
  • In the national tournament, Marian has a 12-3 overall record.
  • The Knights have also won four straight Crossroads League Regular Season Championships.
  • Marian has five Crossroads League regular season titles and three tournament championships, including the last two years.
  • Coach Gearlds has been named Crossroads League Coach of the Year the last three seasons.

  • CU faces Saint Francis on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Expo Center.

  • CU does not get back underway until after the Christmas holiday as the Lady Tigers travel to Mobile, Ala. to play the University of Mobile on Dec. 29 and then Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. on Dec. 31.
