Smith notches career-high 33 points; Tigers fall on the road at No. 3 UPIKE 87-66

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Third-ranked University of Pikeville was too much for the short-handed Tigers on Saturday afternoon, as Campbellsville fell, 87-66.

The lone bright spot for Campbellsville (19-9, 4-8 MSC) was Andrew Smith notching a career-high 33 points on 13-of-22 shooting and grabbing eight rebounds. The other six players were 12-of-41 overall combined.

Like the women's game, the men didn't hit a 3 today. The Tigers went 0-of-11 from deep and the Lady Tigers were 0-of-12. It is the first time since the 3-point basket was implemented neither team didn't hit a 3 in a doubleheader. It is also the first time since the Dakstats era started in 2001 the Tigers haven't hit a 3.

University of Pikeville (25-3, 9-3 MSC) on the other hand was 13-of-28 from downtown. The Bears got back on the winning way after falling 93-74 to Georgetown on Thursday.

Jayvian Delacruz led all scorers with 22 points, while five total Bears scored in double figures.

In the first half UPIKE went ahead by double figures for the first time, 14-4, with 14:26 left forcing coach Brent Vernon to call his second timeout.

Campbellsville cut the lead to six, 14-8, but Pikeville went on a 27-14 run to lead by 19 points, 41-22. The Tigers were able to finish the half on a mini run and get back in the game. Hagen Tyler scored four of his eight points on consecutive possessions to stop the big run for the Bears.

CU was able to cut the lead to 14 points, 43-29, at the break after Adam Stanford made 1-of-2 free throws with zero seconds on the clock.

Pikeville out-scored CU 16-9 in the first six-plus minutes of the second half to take its first 20-point lead. UPIKE was able to push its lead to as large as 27 points, 73-46, with 8:41 left and the lead never got below 20 the rest of the way.

With two Mid-South Conference games remaining, the Tigers are currently tied with Shawnee State and Cumberland University for sixth in the standings at 4-8. UPIKE leads the MSC with a 9-3 record, while Georgetown, Cumberlands and Life are tied for third at 7-5. Shawnee State upset Georgetown in overtime today, 92-90. Lindsey Wilson is fifth in the standings at 6-6.

Campbellsville hosts Cumberland University on Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET before closing the regular season with Lindsey Wilson on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
