Romero leads Tigers with nine kills in four-set loss to St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C. — Tiger volleyball dropped its second straight match on Saturday afternoon, falling in four sets to St. Andrews University (28-26, 23-25, 11-25, 20-25).
 
The Tigers (5-8, 0-3 MSC) were able to pick up a 28-26 win in the opening set but the Knights (4-4, 3-0 MSC) earned wins in the next three for the win.
 
Diego Romero led the Tigers with nine kills, while Rafael Crus and Stefan Srentenovic both had seven kills apiece. The Tigers hit a match-high .269 in the opening set but finished hitting .059, -.222 and .000 in the final three.
 
Diego Hernandez led the way for the Knights with 16 kills, while Robin Imar had 14.
 
In the opening set, neither team had more than a one-point advantage until SAU led 21-19 after a service ace by Imar forcing CU to call a timeout. The Tigers answered with two straight points to knot the match at 22.
 
The Knights had set-point advantage, 24-23, but a block by Shmuel Edney-Williams and Srentenovic kept CU alive. The Tigers went on to scored two straight points to seal the set, 28-26.
 
In the second set, the Tigers were ahead 12-7 and later 14-9 before St. Andrews started to rally. The Knights went on a 7-2 run to knot the match at 16-all. CU jumped back ahead by two points, 18-16 and 19-17, but St. Andrews made another rally to tie it up at 21. The Knights scored three straight to leas 24-21 and held off a late CU run, winning 25-23.
 
SAU then dominated the third set getting out to a 16-6 lead before stretching it to 22-10 and go on for the 25-11 win on 10 kills and nine CU errors while SAU hit .467.
 
The Knights then led for the entire fourth set and closed the match on a 4-0 run to pick up the win and sweep the season series from the Tigers on 12 kills in the final set compared to only eight for CU.
 
The difference maker today was a season-high 14.5 blocks for the Knights.
 
Campbellsville will return home to host Milligan College on Tuesday night in the Powell Athletic Center before hitting the road for four straight matches. First service vs. Milligan is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
