Pitching staff allows just one run in Tigers' doubleheader sweep over Huntington, 3-1 and 4-0

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville pitching staff allowed just one run over the two seven-inning games on Tuesday afternoon to pace Campbellsville to a 3-1 victory in game one, followed by a 4-0 win the game two over Huntington University at HIG Field.

The Tigers (4-4) also pounded out 14 hits over the two games to move their winning streak to three games. Marco Murillo recorded two hits and two RBIs in game one, while nine different players notched a hit in game two against the Foresters (0-6).

Campbellsville got off to another strong start as it notched a run in the first inning. Through the first eight games of the season, the Tigers have outscored the opposition, 5-0, in the first inning.

Matthew Valdez reached on error to start the inning and after the next two batters were retired, Logan Roberts singled back up the middle to score Valdez, which put Campbellsville ahead 1-0 after the first inning.

The Tigers tacked on their second run of the game following a triple down the line in right field from Murillo to score Roberts from first base with just one out. Campbellsville was unable to bring Murillo into score and he was stranded at third to end the fourth inning.

After five scoreless frames from the duo of Tyler Deason and Dillon Day, Huntington finally broke through with a run in the top of the sixth. A leadoff walk came around to score on the Foresters lone hit of the inning by Daniel Lichty, who single to left field to score Jamar Weaver from third base.

However, the Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning with Murillo driving in his second run of the game to plate Ty Housden from second base.

Kirby Broadbent tossed the final 1-2/3 innings and shut the door on Huntington and helped the Tigers pick up a 3-1 victory in the first half of the doubleheader.

Deason (1-0) notched his first victory of the season throwing four innings and allowing just three hits. Day did not surrender a hit, but allowed the lone run of the game, while Broadbent allowed just one hit en route to his first save of the year.

Alex McCutcheon (0-1) threw all six innings for the Foresters and allowed three runs – two earned – on five hits.

Campbellsville 4, Huntington 0

In the second game of the day, Nick Johnston mowed through the Huntington lineup as he went 4-2/3 innings allowing just two hits. Before the Tigers scored the first run in the third inning, Johnston faced the minimum and allowed just a walk.

Johnston also carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before a leadoff single broke it up and the Forester recorded two of their three hits for the game in the top of the fifth inning.

After being held scoreless through the first two innings, the Campbellsville bats came alive in the third inning and scored two runs on three hits. With runners on second and third with just one out, Roberts doubled to right field and scored Housden and Chris Taitgue to put the Tigers ahead 2-0.

Two more runs came across in the fourth inning, as the ball did not leave the infield on the two scoring plays.

Tyson Solis and David Montoya started the inning with back-to-back singles and attempted sacrifice bunt from Jalen Horton ended up behind first base after a wild throw, which allowed Solis to score. On the next play, Austin Peterson went for a sacrifice safety squeeze that allowed Montoya to slide in under the tag and Peterson reached on the fielder's choice.

With a 4-0 lead and no outs in the fourth inning, Campbellsville could not increase their lead as Huntington got out of the jam.

Both offenses went quite over the final two-and-half innings as the two teams combined for six hits over that span.

The Tigers tried to add some more insurance runs in the sixth inning, but they left the bases loaded.

DJ Wilson threw the final 2-1/3 innings and allowed just one hit and preserved the shutout for Campbellsville in a 4-0 win.
