Tigers run falls short as No. 11 Montana Western sweeps CU basketball in the Round of 16

KANSAS, Mo. — Montana Western held Campbellsville scoreless in the final 2:03 and the 11th-ranked Bulldogs finished the game on a 6-0 run to out-last the Tigers in the NAIA Round of 16, 75-72.
 
Andrew Smith scored six straight points to push the Tigers ahead 72-69 with 2:03 left.
 
Montana Western's brought the three-point deficit back to one after Kooper Kidgell scored his 12th second-half point with 58 seconds left. On the next offensive possession, Hagen Tyler missed a wide-open 3-pointer from the corner and Jalen Coates fouled one of the best free throw shooters in the country, Dom Robinson, with 23 clicks left. Robinson hit both to give the Bulldogs a 73-72 lead.
 
The Tigers rushed another contested 3-pointer on its next possession and Marcus Payne hit two free throws for Montana Western to give the Bulldogs the 75-72 lead.
 
Campbellsville missed its final four shots, including a 3-pointer by Shawn Johnson with time expiring but the game-tying triple fell short.
 
Tyler led Campbellsville with 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting and 4-of-8 from deep. He was perfect from the free throw line making all three attempts and grabbed seven rebounds.
 
Smith followed suit with a 14 point and 14 rebound performance to end his season.
 
The biggest stat was the free throw shooting. The Tigers were 8-of-10 while Montana Western shot 21 more attempts, hitting 14-of-31 (45%). The Bulldogs were called for only 12 fouls compared to 20 for CU.
 
Campbellsville's season ends with a record of 24-11, as the Tigers won five of their last seven games to reach the Big Dance.
 
In the first half, the Tigers came out firing. CU led 11-0 and later 22-11 before Montana Western flipped the deficit into a 23-12 Bulldog run to trail by one, 35-34, at the break.
 
It was the second straight game the Tigers held a couple big scorers for their opponents well under their quote for the opening half.
 
Dom Robinson, averaging 17.5 points per game, had six in the first half, while Zaccheus Darko-Kelly had three. But Robinson finished the night with 13 points, 11 rebounds and one assist away from a triple double with nine, while Darko-Kelley had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
 
The Bulldogs were led by Brandon Jones' 22 points, but the big fella went 5-of-14 from the free throw line. Kidgell finished with 12 points – all in the second half – to round out the double figuring scoring.
 
In the second half, the Tigers led by as large as six points after Tyler made his fourth 3-pointer, 66-60, but Montana Western finished the game on a 15-6 run.
 
Montana Western (27-7) will now move on to play the winner of Langston and Graceland on Saturday night in the NAIA Quarterfinal.
