Lowest scoring quarter of the year dooms Lady Tigers in NAIA Round of 16

BILLINGS, Mont. — Montana Western out-scored Campbellsville 22-8 in the third quarter and hit 18-of-22 free throws to seal an upset win over the No. 3 Lady Tigers in the NAIA Tournament, 60-57.

Campbellsville's offense wasn't at its best. In the first quarter, CU only scored 10 points – which was the third lowest mark all season – but the Lady Tigers countered that by only tallying eight in the third – the lowest all season – in the loss.

Senior Madison Clements went out with a bang, scoring 22 points and hitting four Edward Jones 3-point baskets, grabbed four rebounds and dishing out a game-high four assists. Junior Jordan Doram tallied 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting and led CU with six boards.

Campbellsville's season ends one win away from 30 victories, as CU finished with a record of 29-6. Montana Western moves on to the NAIA Quarterfinal round to meet Menlo on Saturday afternoon at RimRock Auto Arena at Metra Park.

The Bulldogs (26-8) took an early 10-5 lead after Tori Anderson knocked down two 3-pointers in span of three minutes but Clements scored five straight to end the opening quarter to tie it up at 10-all.

In the second frame, a pair of old fashioned 3-point plays by Doram and Lexxus Graham put the Lady Tigers ahead by their largest mark of three points, 19-16. Then just 40 seconds later, Clements nailed her second triple to push CU ahead, 22-18.

Both teams were ice cold in the opening half. CU finished 10-of-27, while the Bulldogs finished 7-of-27.

But the decisive third quarter is when the wheels fell off for CU. Montana Western started the frame on an 8-2 run and CU went seven minutes without a field goal — from the 7:40 mark until Doram hit a basket with 46 seconds remaining.

In the span, Montana Western out-scored CU 22-8 and led by 10 points, 42-32.

Campbellsville rallied though and had a chance late. The Lady Tigers outscored Montana Western 25-18 in the fourth and were able to cut the lead down to as little as three on four different occasions. But each time CU cut the lead to three, the Bulldogs had an answer.

In the final 10 seconds, Clements banged her fourth 3 of the day and the Lady Tigers' defense picked up a turnover after a five-second call on Montana Western on the ensuing in-bounds pass. With four seconds, CU had a chance but Madison Faulkner missed a jumper with time expiring to secure the upset.

Even though CU finished hitting 21-of-56 compared to 17-of-48 for Montana Western, the Bulldogs hit three more 3-point baskets and eight more free throws. The Bulldogs finished hitting 8-of-19 from deep, compared to 5-of-16 for CU.
