Lady Tiger bats go silent in split on Day 1 of Gulf Coast Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Lady Tiger softball earned a 6-0 win over Central Methodist but fell 9-0 in five innings to Thomas University to split on Day 1 of the Gulf Shores Invitational.

It was a slow offensive day as the Lady Tigers (7-1) could only muster eight hits overall, but CU capitalized with six RBI in the first game. Ryley Whitney was the only Lady Tiger to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 in game one.

Neely Quint earned the victory in game one with her third complete game shutout and improving to 4-0.

Morgan Gailor fell victim to her first loss of the season, falling to 3-1. Gailor also gave up her first two earned runs of the season – allowing six total runs and two were earned.

Campbellsville has a quick turnaround on Saturday, as pool play finishes up when CU takes on Brewton-Parker College at 12:15 p.m. ET.

Game one: Campbellsville 6, Central Methodist 0

CU scored in only two of the 12 innings today and it started with a two-spot in the first inning. Jacqueline Roof led off the game with a hit-by-pitch and Rebecca Miller reached on an error to set up a two-RBI double by Brianna Scott.

Fast forward to the fifth inning, Ryleigh Oldham doubled to right field and was followed with a Roof single – who advanced to second on a throw – to put runners on second and third with no outs. Miller followed with a hit-by-pitch and Tori Humphrey picked up an RBI with a sac fly to score Oldham from third base.

Leading 3-0, the Lady Tigers weren't finished just yet. Alexis Smith picked up an RBI single up the middle chasing starter Ashley Wills out after just 4.1 innings and CU leading 4-0. Whitney turned on a fastball up the middle to score Miller from third and later Kelly Wheeler walked with the bases loaded to pick up her seventh RBI of the season.

After allowing a base hit and the Lady Tigers compounded that with an error, Quint worked out of the third inning unscathed.

The only other innings the Eagles had runners on base were the fifth and sixth – both base hits – but Quint stranded them as well. She finished tossing seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out four.

Game two: Thomas 9, Campbellsville 0

After the offense averaged almost 10 runs per game in the first seven contests, the Lady Tigers bats were non-existent in the second game.

CU was only about to scratch two hits against Thomas and the Nighthawks run-ruled CU 9-0 in five innings.

Gailor allowed four straight hits to open the game and Thomas tallied a total of six base knocks in the inning – and took advantage of a Lady Tiger error – to lead 5-0.

CU had opportunities to claw away at the lead but couldn't muster the offense. Roof singled to lead off, but Rebecca Miller popped up a bunt and was followed with consecutive strikeouts by Humphrey and Smith.

In the second, the Lady Tigers worked the bases loaded with two outs. Mia Aldridge walked, Wheeler reached on an error and Oldham walked but Roof struck out to end the threat.

In the fourth, Taisa Kirindongo doubled to lead off the frame and coach Shannon Wathen relieved Gailor with freshman Karson Williams. After a couple errors, Thomas scored another unearned run to lead 6-0 after four innings.

The Nighthawks put up a three-spot in the fifth off three hits and another Lady Tiger error – their fourth of the game – to seal the run-rule victory.

Williams finished by tossing two innings, allowing three runs and three hits – two earned.

Campbellsville has a quick turnaround on Saturday, as pool play finishes up when CU takes on Brewton-Parker College at 12:15 p.m. ET.
