No. 4 Tigers drop second-straight match; fall at home to No. 16 Cumberland, 7-2

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Following eight-straight wins to start the season, the Tigers have dropped their last two matches after falling 7-2 in a Mid-South Conference contest to No. 16 Cumberland University on Thursday at the Kelly Hall Tennis Complex.
 
The Tigers dropped to 8-2 on the season and 2-1 in the MSC, while the Phoenix remain with just one loss at 11-1 and opened their MSC slate with a win.
 
Chrys Castro and Alejandro Reyes put Campbellsville ahead with an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Pau Grabuleda Cruanas and Francisco Fernandez Meaca, but the lead did not last long as Axel Lucich and Thiago Lopes beat Martin Munoz and Blayze O'Keefe, 8-6.
 
At No. 3 doubles, Cumberland hedged ahead 2-1 after Riccardo Ferraris and Ramon Puertolas took down Adrian Sabrojo and Pablo Alonso Munoz, 8-5.
 
Starting the singles scoring was Puertolas with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Castro at second-seeded singles. O'Keefe ended the Phoenix run at three-straight team points with a three-set win at No. 3 singles. O'Keefe took the first set over Ferraris, 7-5, but lost set two, 6-2. In the decisive third set, O'Keefe grabbed a 6-1 win to clinch the match.
 
With the team score at 3-2 in favor of Cumberland, the Phoenix rattled off wins in the final four matches. Reyes dropped a tight three-set match to Grabuleda Cruanas, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. In the fourth-seeded singles match, Fernandez Meaca beat Alonso Munoz, 6-4, 7-5 to clinch the match win for Cumberland.
 
Capping off the match, Lucich beat Alex Spalding 6-1, 6-4 and Lopes edged Munoz 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles en route to the 7-2 loss for the Tigers.
 
Campbellsville is back in action with a non-conference matchup against Lindenwood University-Belleville at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday at the Kelly Hall Tennis Complex.
