Tigers roll past Webber International but fall to Warner University in conference semifinals

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger volleyball earned a 3-0 sweep over Webber International in the opening round of the conference tournament, but their season ended in the semifinal after falling 3-1 to top-seeded Warner University.

Campbellsville, which is in its second year as a varsity sponsored program, ends the season with a 16-15 record. Warner University (17-2) is advancing to the conference finals on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. vs. St. Andrews University (RECORD) in the Powell Athletic Center.

Rafael Cruz led the Tigers with a combined 24 kills in the two matches. He finished with 13 vs. Webber and 11 against Warner. Diego Romero and Stefan Srentenovic both tallied 15 kills in the two matches as well.

Jeremy Hernandez finished with 33 assists in each match of the tournament, while Srentenovic led the way with 15 digs overall.

Match one: Campbellsville 3, Webber International 1

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead as Sretenovic started the day with an opening kill and CU never looked back. Campbellsville doubled up the Warriors, 14-7, but Webber International battled to get the score within four, 21-17. A service error by Jack Chernak sealed the opening set win, 25-20.

The second set took extra points as CU ended up winning, 30-28.  Webber jumped out to a 15-11 lead and later led, 21-18.

But the Tigers came storming back. CU went on a 4-1 run to knot the frame at 22-all. Both teams would trade points until the Warriors held set-point, 24-23, but Cruz sparked the Tigers. He earned a kill and gave Campbellsville its first lead, 25-24, after a service ace. The set would go on to be tied 28-all until Webber committed two costly errors down the stretch.

The third set was all Campbellsville.  Webber led 3-2 but the Tigers went on a 8-1 run to lead 10-4 and never took their foot off the gas.

CU pushed its lead to seven, 20-13, and eventually sealed the sweep, 25-19.

Match two: Warner 3, Campbellsville 1

Cruz and Romero both led CU with 10 kills, but the Tigers could not overcome the big front line of Warner in the semifinal, as the Royals tallied 21 total blocks compared to eight for CU. The Royals also out-hit Campbellsville, .227-.170 in the match to secure their spot in the finals.

The first set was as close as could be. Neither took a lead larger than two but that's where the deficit would stay for CU at the end, falling 25-23. The Tigers actually led, 19-17 but Warner out-scored CU, 8-4, to secure the set win.

The second frame was all Campbellsville. CU came out swinging and dominated by hitting .520 compared to .050 for Warner. The Tigers ended up winning the set, 25-15.

But Warner returned the favor in the third frame by out-hitting CU .316 to -0.74 and winning 25-15.

The fourth set went to Warner as well, 25-18.

The loss ends the season for CU with a 16-15 record after going 10-21 in year one last season.

The annual awards banquet is being hosted on CU's campus tonight and a released will be posted with conference awards.
