MOBILE, Ala. – Campbellsville's men's tennis team won the 2018 NCCAA National Championship after beating Emmanuel College, 5-0, in the championship match on Friday morning at the Mobile Tennis Center.
This is the Tigers third NCCAA national title after winning the championship 2012 and 2015.
Campbellsville rolled to the title with a sweep in doubles action.
Alejandro Reyes and
Pablo Alonso Munoz won at No. 1 doubles over Juan Carlos Romero and Enrique Alcacer, 8-1. Then at No. 2 doubles,
Chrys Castro and
Adrian Sabrojo won 8-4 against Tom Jarry and Lucas Hideo Sasaki.
The Tigers (18-6) jumped ahead, 3-0, after winning by default at No. 3 doubles.
Needing just two points in singles,
Blayze O'Keefe picked a point at No. 3 single with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Lucas Pereira and then Alonso Munoz defeated Jorge Canadas, 6-1, 6-2 to seal the 5-0 victory for Campbellsville.
In the unfinished matches, Reyes was tied at No. 1 singles, 6-6 in the first set, while Castro dropped the first set, 6-4, but was leading 4-1 in the second set at No. 2 singles. At No. 4 singles, Sabrojo had just won the first set, 6-4, at
Martin Munoz was tied at No. 6 singles in the first set, 6-6.
The Tigers continue their postseason at the NAIA National Championship next week at the Mobile Tennis Center.
