Tigers start NAIA National Championship with 7-2 victory over Texas A&M-Texarkana

MOBILE, Ala. – Campbellsville's men's tennis team started its NAIA Tournament run with a 7-2 victory over 23rd-seeded Texas A&M University-Texarkana on Tuesday afternoon from the Mobile Tennis Center.
 
Fresh of their NCCAA National Championship, the Tigers (19-6) got off to a strong start in the first round and will face No.8-ranked and host University of Mobile on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET in the second round of the tournament.
 
Campbellsville grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the match with Blayze O'Keefe and Martin Munoz first winning No. 3 doubles, 8-3, over Gavin Beach and Alberto Cabrillo. At No. 2 doubles, Chrys Castro and Adrian Sabrojo grabbed an 8-4 win to put the Tigers on top, 2-0.
 
The Eagles (17-5) avoided the doubles sweep with Cole Guy and Alejandro Oviedo beating Alejandro Reyes and Pablo Alonso Munoz, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.
 
In singles competition, Texas A&M-Texarkana tied the match, 2-2, after Beach swept Sabrojo, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. However, the Tigers took over the match and won the final five singles matches.
 
O'Keefe won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, over Sammy Hogan at No. 3 singles and Castro outlasted Oviedo in the a three-set match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to put the Tigers on the brink of a victory. The clinching point came at No. 6 singles after Munoz swept Cabrillo, 6-2, 7-6.
 
Playing out the first round matches, Alonso Munoz won, 6-2, 6-7, 10-5 at No. 5 singles and the 7-2 victory was secured at No. 1 singles after Reyes beat Guy in three sets, 6-5, 6-7, 6-3.
 
With the win, the Tigers move into the second round of the national tournament against Mobile at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
