Lady Tiger offense rallies, while Quint breaks single-season wins record in Opening Round win

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — It took five innings, but No. 4 Campbellsville rallied when it mattered in the fifth and sixth innings to come from behind and defeat No. 17 Faulkner University in the NAIA Opening Round Winner's Bracket, 4-2.

Campbellsville (47-8) trailed 2-0 after four innings but the Lady Tigers scored four unanswered runs to punch their ticket to the NAIA Opening Round Championship. CU is now sitting pretty in the winner's bracket and will need to be beaten twice tomorrow. The Lady Tigers will face the winner of two-seeded Faulkner and four-seeded Madonna at 2:30 p.m. ET at Michael Buchanon Park. Live video will be available on the CU Sports Network.

Tonight, though, it was Emma Carnell (17-8) working a perfect game through three innings and only allowing one hit through four, the Lady Tigers finally started to find their offense in the final two-plus innings.

On the flip side, Neely Quint was the exact opposite. Faulkner scattered five hits in the first two innings, but Quint allowed only one base knock the rest of the way to break the single-season wins record with 29. She tossed seven innings and allowed two unearned runs, while striking out six.

The Eagles loaded the bases to start the game and Quint allowed a bloop-RBI single to get behind early. Quint also allowed runners on first and second with one out in the second but also worked out of that jam. Overall, Faulkner left all five of those base runners on.

Offensively, the rally started with a leadoff hit-by-pitch to Brianna Scott to begin the fifth. Jordan Ison moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt and Ryleigh Oldham singled to place runners on first and third with one out. Mia Aldridge, who hasn't seen action in almost a month, delivered an RBI pinch-hit single to score CU's first run. One batter later, Dana Adkins tied the game with a suicide squeeze, 2-2.

Quint sat down Faulkner 1-2-3 in the sixth on just nine pitches, and the Lady Tigers lit the fireworks. Senior Rebecca Miller lined a shot down the right field line and was able to scamper all the way around for an inside the park home runs – the first homer of the season for her – giving CU a 3-2 lead.

Later in the inning, Alexis Smith took advantage of three of the four Faulkner errors to put CU ahead, 4-2.

That was all Quint needed in the circle. She sat Faulkner down 1-2-3 in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings to seal her nine complete-game shut-out of the season.

Campbellsville is now playing in the Opening Round Championship for the second time in four years. The Lady Tigers' only other appearance came in 2014 – the same year CU rallied out of the loser's bracket to claim their first Opening Round title and advance to the NAIA World Series. If CU can win one game tomorrow, the Lady Tigers would advance to the NAIA World Series in Clermont, Fla.
