Faulkner does the unthinkable; wins three games on Tuesday and ends CU's season in Opening Round

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Needing to win three games on Tuesday to keep their season alive, the two-seeded Faulkner University Eagles upset the No. 1-seed Campbellsville in the NAIA Opening Round Championship games.

Faulkner defeated Madonna University in the elimination finals this morning before handing the fourth-ranked Lady Tigers a pair of 2-0 and 2-1 losses. Campbellsville's season ends with a 47-10 record, while the Eagles improve to 48-15 and will advance to the NAIA World Series for the first time in program history.

The Eagles did the unthinkable after NAIA officials made the call to turn the Opening Round into a two-day tournament at Michael O. Buchanon Park. Weather forced the tournament to be played in two days but that didn't bother Faulkner one bit – which won three games on Tuesday.

The workhorse in the circle, Caitlin Perry pitched all three games for Faulkner and tossed over 300 pitches. She held Campbellsville to only three hits in game one and two in the finale, while allowing only one run – an RBI triple by Mia Aldridge in the fourth inning of game two.

Perry (23-5) gave way to Emma Cornell in the circle for the final three innings and Cornell allowed one hit and two walks but worked out of multiple jams.

Neely Quint (29-3) didn't have her best stuff in the circle but gutted it out in the first game today. She allowed 10 hits but only one earned run in her 120-pitch performance. But it was the offense that did not come up with the timely hit that CU needed.

Morgan Gailor (17-7) was terrific in the circle in the championship finale allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out four. Gailor allowed two unearned runs in the fourth inning and that was all Faulkner needed to hold on for the come-from-behind win.

Game one: Faulkner 2, Campbellsville 0

Like Monday's winner's bracket contest between these two teams, Faulkner struck first. The Eagles picked up an RBI double by Shelby Brown to score Hannahlee Harris, who singled to lead off the game.

CU worked out of a jam in the third inning after Faulkner had two on with less than two outs, but Quint was able to wiggle out of trouble.

In the sixth, Faulkner scored an insurance run with two outs. With runners on second and third, Alicia Richardson grounded softly between Alexis Smith and Jordan Ison on the right side of the infield, but Richardson beat Smith in the foot race to the bag for the infield RBI hit.

The Lady Tigers had a chance in the sixth with runnesr on first and second with only one out, but Oldham and Aldridge were unable to capitalize.

Game two: Faulkner 2, Campbellsville 1

The Lady Tigers struck first in the fourth inning. The lone run Campbellsville mustered today came after a leadoff walk to Ryley Whitney and Aldridge delivered an RBI triple to right-center field.

CU had a chance to add on with a runner on third and less than two outs, but Ryleigh Oldham popped out and Brianna Scott grounded out to end the threat.

That lead didn't last long, though. Gailor allowed a one-out single to Shelby Brown but picked up her third strikeout of the night for two quick outs. Then Kendall Bennett smoked a ground ball to Dana Adkins at third base and her throw was lost in the sun by first basemen Alexis Smith giving the Eagles another life.

Maggie Tipton made CU pay after the error and cleared the bases with a two-RBI triple to right-centerfield.

That was all Faulkner needed. Campbellsville had a chance to answer in the fifth after Adkins walked and Miller delivered an infield single by Smith's liner was snagged at short and Whitney flew out to end the threat.

In the seventh, Adkins earned a one-out walk to flip the lineup back to the top with seniors Jacqueline Roof and Rebecca Miller due up but the duo both popped up to end the Lady Tigers' run at a NAIA World Series.

A complete season recap and feature on the senior class – which is the all-time winningest class in program history – will be posted in the following days.
