Two-run seventh inning propels Tigers to 7-5 victory against top-seeded Science & Arts

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Campbellsville continued its run through the elimination bracket and grabbed its second victory on Tuesday with a 7-5 victory over top-seeded University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma in the Bowling Green Bracket at Bowling Green Ballpark

Bryson Wallet and Tyler Deason did the damage for the Tigers (39-16) at the bottom of the lineup with three hits and two RBIs apiece and Deason hit a home run against the Drovers (46-8).

After a scoreless first frame, the offense for both teams picked up in the second inning. Coleton Horner hit a solo home run out to left field to put the Drovers ahead, 1-0, early. In the bottom half of the frame, the two-out runs came back around for Campbellsville with Wallet singling up the middle to score Marco Murillo.

Still with two outs in the second inning, Tyler Deason mashed a deep fly ball over the wall in right field grabbing a 3-1 lead for the Tigers.

The Drover offense continued to heat up with four runs in the top of the third inning, where three came before the first out was recorded. The big hit came with the bases loaded on a single from Kenniel Rivera that scored two and after an error, a third ran came in and Rivera moved up to third base.

An early pitching change brought in Logan Roberts, where he retired his first batter, but a single from Horner drove in Rivera from third base to extend the Science & Arts lead to, 5-3. Roberts got of the jam leaving two Drovers on the bases.

Science & Arts looked to break the game open in the top of the fourth inning, but Roberts left the bases loaded with out surrendering a run to keep the Tigers within striking distance.

Campbellsville came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Wallet driving in his second run. Deason lined a hard shot back up the box that hit the umpire and with the ball dead, the Tigers had the bases loaded. A double play ball from from Brandon Douglas was grounded to P.J. Garcia at shortstop, but Daniel Lafarga stretched just off the bag as Douglas was safe at first and Campbellsville tied the game, 5-5.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tigers regained the lead with two runs. Deason led off the inning with a single up the middle and then a sacrifice bunt moved him to second base before being lifted for a pinch runner in Jalen Horton. Two batters later, Solis doubled to the gap in right-center field and drove in Horton.

After the Drovers picked up their second out, an error from Garcia at shortstop allowed Murillo to reach base and Valdez scored on the play to give the Tigers an insurance run and a 7-5 lead after seven innings.

DJ Wilson entered the game to record the final out in the seventh inning and he shut the door of the final two full frames to secure the 7-5 victory for the Tigers to keep their NAIA Opening Round Tournament alive.

Wilson (6-1) earned the win and is tied for the team lead in wins with six after pitching 2-1/3 innings allowing just two hits and two walks, while striking out two batters. Mikey Hooper got the start and pitched into the third inning, but did not record an out and allowed five runs on four hits. Roberts logged 4-2/3 innings out of the bullpen and allowed just two hits and struck out seven batters.

Tucker White (7-2) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs – six earned – in his 6-1/3 innings to start.

The Tigers stay alive in the Bowling Green Bracket and advance to the championship round to take on Reinhardt University at 10 a.m. CT. Campbellsville will need to beat the Eagles twice to win the Bowling Green Opening Round Bracket.
