BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – After forcing the if necessary game, Campbellsville's offense went quiet and dropped the winner-take-all game to Reinhardt University, 5-1, in the final game of the NAIA Opening Round – Bowling Green Bracket at Bowling Green Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.
Marco Murillo and
Bryson Wallet were the only two Tigers (40-17) to record multiple hits, while the duo of Matthew Vaccaro and Kaleb Swayze hit the Eagles (41-18) into the Avista-NAIA World Series.
Campbellsville got ahead first in the home half of the second inning. With one out,
Ty Housden singled up the middle and then
David Montoya reached on an error to to place runners on the corners. Wallet came up with another RBI with a single out to left field, giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
Reinhardt came back with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, where the inning started after
Matthew Valdez misplayed a groundball. Following a double from Swayze, Matt Trawick scored on wild pitch and then Swayze scored two batters later on a groundout.
In the top of the sixth inning, Swayze posted his second home run of the day to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. The runs continued to roll for Reinhardt with a two-run home run from Vaccaro to make it 5-1 in favor of the the Eagles.
After its strong start, the Campbellsville offense went stagnant and was held without out a run for the remainder of the game. The Tigers were unable to mount a second rally on the day as they lost, 5-1, to Reinhardt.
Despite not allowing an earned run,
Tyler Deason (6-4) suffered the loss after allowing two unearned run on two hits for the Tigers.
Jesus Palacios (3-2) hurled a gem allowing just one runs on hits in seven innings to pace Reinhardt.
With the victory, the Eagles move on to the Avista-NAIA World Series later this month in Lewiston, Idaho.
Campbellsville bows out of the NAIA Tournament with a record of 40-17.
