EASLEY, S.C. – The Campbellsville baseball team got back on the winning track on Thursday night with a 12-0 win over second-seeded Colorado Christian University in eight innings at the JB "Red" Owens Sports Complex.
Anthony Arias kept the strong pitching performances for the Tigers (42-18) rolling after he tossed seven innings allowing just four hits and no runs, while striking out eight batters. The duo of
DePaul Blunt and
Brandon Douglas led the offense going a combined 6-for-9 with five RBIs.
Matthew Valdez started the game with a bang after he belted a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the game.
Carrying the 1-0 lead into the third inning, the Tigers broke open the game with five runs on four hits and two errors. After placing runners on the corners with no outs,
David Montoya plated a run with a sacrifice fly. Then with the bases loaded, Blunt delivered a bases clearing triple to right field to push the Campbellsville lead to 5-0 over the Cougars (25-29).
The Tigers' five-run third inning came to a close after Douglas reached on an error allowing Blunt to score and giving Campbellsville a 6-0 edge.
Tyson Solis drove in a run in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice, where his speed down to first base avoided an inning-ending double play.
With a 7-0 advantage, the Tigers continue to pull away with another run in the sixth inning.
Chris Taitague doubled down the left-field line with two outs in the inning, driving home
Ty Housden from second base and extending the Tiger lead to 8-0.
After being held scoreless in the seventh inning, the Tigers put up another crooked number after plating four runs in the eighth inning. Taitague drove in another run with a double down the right-field line to run the Campbellsville lead to nine. Knocking on the door of the 10-run rule, the Tigers loaded the bases and took a 10-0 lead after a balk by Colorado Christian.
Douglas gave Campbellsville a couple more insurance runs with a double to left-center field to put the Tigers on top, 12-0.
Dillon Day tossed the eighth inning and hit two batters to put runners on the corners with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts from Day preserved the shutout and the 12-0 victory for Campbellsville.
Arias (5-0) faced the minimum over the first four innings en route to his fifth win of the year.
Evan Fink (6-6) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs – five earned – on 12 hits.
The Tigers wrap up pool play on Friday afternoon at noon ET against Warner University at Easley High School.
