Bats come alive as No. 21 Baseball beats Shawnee State, 11-5, in MSC Tournament opener

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Second-seeded Campbellsville posted a pair of crooked numbers to pick up an 11-5 victory over seventh-seeded Shawnee State University in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Tyson Solis and Matthew Valdez each recorded three-hit games for the Tigers (33-15), while Marco Murillo hit the lone home run against the Bears (14-29) with a three-run shot en route to a four-RBI game.

Following two scoreless innings, the Tiger bats woke up in the bottom of the third inning with four runs on five hits and an error. With three-straight one-out singles to load the bases, Ty Housden delivered a single down the left field to score Valdez and Solis. After an error from Chase Thurber out in left field, Housden moved up to second base and Logan Roberts advanced to third.

Murillo drove in his first run with a sacrifice fly and then Montoya drove in the fourth Campbellsville run of the third inning with a single to left-center field, to give the Tigers a 4-0 advantage.

Shawnee State got two runs back on three hits in the next half inning, but Campbellsville countered with two runs of its own in the next half inning. Valdez and Solis came back around with RBIs. Valdez drove in Jalen Horton – pinch running for Shane Stober – with a double and Solis followed with a RBI single.

With a 6-2 lead heading into the sixth inning, the Bears pulled within two runs after another two-run inning. However, another crooked from the Tigers followed with five runs on four hits in the home half of the sixth inning.

Solis started the Campbellsville scoring in the sixth inning with an RBI single out to left field, bringing around Chris Taitague from third base. In his first plate appearance of the game, Horton reached first base on a fielder's choice and drove in Valdez from third base. Murillo ended the Campbellsville scoring with a three-run home run out to left-center field to put the Tigers ahead 11-4.

The Bears tacked on one more run in the ninth inning, but Campbellsville walked away with an 11-5 victory in the first round of the MSC Tournament.

Anthony Arias (3-0) picked up the win after tossing five innings and allowing just two runs on six hits. Arias also struck out four batters to finish one off of season high. Mikey Hooper threw three innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Nick Johnston pitched the final inning allowing one run and two hits in the ninth inning.

Kyle Wisnewski (3-5) suffered the loss after going four innings and giving up nine hits, six runs – five earned runs – and one walk.

The two teams combined for 27 hits in the contest, where Shawnee State left nine runners on base, compared to seven from the Tigers.

Campbellsville is back in action on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET and takes on the winner of third-seeded Cumberland University and sixth-seeded University of Pikeville at Bowling Green Ballpark.
