MOBILE, Ala. – Campbellsville women's tennis team started the 2018 NCCAA National Championship with a 5-3 victory over McMurry University and then beat Judson University, 5-2, to round out the first day of the NCCAA National Championship at the Mobile Tennis Center.
With the two wins, the Lady Tigers (14-7) move to 2-0 in Pool B and are tied with Dallas Baptist University atop the pool standings. Campbellsville takes on the Patriots on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. ET.
Campbellsville 5, McMurry 3
After heading into the match down 2-0 with defaults at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, the Lady Tigers were able to rally for the victory. In doubles competition, the duo of
Bolor Enkhbayar and
Majella Nobile won at No. 1 doubles over Samantha Ritz and Kaitlyn Roberts, 8-4.
Brooklyn Harris and
Bailey Decker moved to No. 2 doubles and grabbed an 8-3 victory against Claire Huffine and Zayra Gomez to even the match heading into single competition.
Straight-set victories were the trend in single competition as each of the four completed matches ended in straight sets. The lone victory in singles competition that McMurry (11-8) earned was at No. 5 when Decker dropped a 6-0, 6-0 contest to Neah Garza.
However, the Lady Tigers posted wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to secure the 5-3 victory.
Kaede Amano won 6-2, 6-0 over Ritz in her normal No. 1 spot. Nobile rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles against Gomez, while the final Campbellsville point came at No. 4 singles with Harris winning, 6-2, 6-2, over Briana Perez.
Campbellsville 5, Judson 2
Campbellsville continued its strong start to the national tournament after falling behind 2-0 to Judson once again. In doubles competition, Enkhbayar and Nobile took the top-seeded doubles match over Sophia Corona Garza and Ellen Binnion, 8-4. Playing in her first doubles match of the day, Amano teamed up with Harris to win, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles against Irina Iacob and Lauren Saiki.
With Judson winning No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles by default, the scored was tied, 2-2, at the start of the singles competition. Amano, Enkhbayar and Nobile won at the top-three singles matches to seal the win for the Lady Tigers.
Amano won at No. 1 singles over Corona Garza, 6-1, 6-0, and Nobile won by the same score line at No. 3 singles against Binnion. Enkhbayar won in straight sets without a dropping a game after she beat Iacob, 6-0, 6-0.
Campbellsville has a contest against third-seeded Dallas Baptist on Wednesday with both teams sitting at 2-0 after the first day of competition.
