DAYTON, Tenn. — The
Daniel Branley era started with a win after Lady Tiger soccer defeated his alma mater, Bryan College, on Tuesday evening, 2-0.
With the victory, Campbellsville improves to 1-0 on the year and has now started with a win in four of the last five seasons. Bryan College, which was receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Preseason Poll, falls to 0-1.
The first half was rusty for both squads as you could tell it was the season opener, but Campbellsville controlled possession for majority of the contest and dominated the pitch. The Lady Tigers out-shot Bryan College 23-4 overall and 16-1 in the second period.
CU's goals both came in the second half, as the freshmen duo of
Emma Nilsson and
Hope Sanders connected for the season's first score. Nilsson hit Sanders in the 68
thminute to put CU ahead, 1-0.
The Lady Tigers had a flurry of opportunities to extend its lead within a seven-minute span. Sanders had a shot go high and
Lakin Walls had a shot sail wide. But in the 75
thminute, Campbellsville pushed its score to 2-0 as
Rachel Blumfeldt, the leading scorer from last season, finished a double-assist from freshman
Claudia Eckstein and sophomore
Ally Furnish.
Freshman
Sydney Pinkham had a fairly easy day in goal, recording her first two saves of the season. Her counterpart, Caragan Treola, had a busy day in the net with nine saves on the 23 Campbellsville shots.
Campbellsville will now return to Finley Stadium for its home opener on Friday, Aug. 24. The Lady Tigers are hosting Bluefield College at 7 p.m. ET and fans can follow live video and stats on the Campbellsville University Sports Network.
