Lady Tigers fall to Point University in five sets to finish off MSC Crossover Challenge

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Lady Tigers rallied in the third and fourth sets but ultimately fell short in the fifth and decisive set (16-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 10-15) versus Point University on Saturday evening. This was their final match of the MSC Crossover Challenge as they went 3-1 on the weekend.

Kaite Johnson shined on Saturday evening as she finished with 18 kills and 16 digs. Julia Fonseca also had double figure kills with 14 and only one error as she had a .481 killing percentage and six service aces. Paige Merrick finished with 47 assists and 12 digs for her third double-double in four matches to start her collegiate career. Savannah Moss led the way with 22 digs and Jaimie Thompson also added 11.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first two sets the Lady Tigers rallied with 25-20 wins in the third and fourth sets. During the third set, with the Lady Tigers trailing 6-5, Fonseca had a personal 4-0 run as she recorded a kill followed by three straight service aces that put Campbellsville up 9-6 and rallied the Lady Tigers to the third set victory.

The fourth set was as tight as a contest can be as neither team led by more than two points until the very end with the Lady Tigers took a 23-20 lead. They finished the set off with a 4-0 run leading to the final score of 25-20. Fonseca and Johnson combined for 12 of their 32 kills during the third and fourth sets of the match.

Campbellsville battled but in the fifth set Point University was able to gain control taking the 15-10 set win and the match, 3-2.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action on August 31 when they face the University of St. Francis at 4 p.m. and Rochester College at 8 p.m. in Adrian, Michigan.
