ADRIAN, Mich. – The Lady Tiger volleyball team improved to 6-1 on the season after they defeated Robert Morris University, 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-18, 25-23) on Saturday morning.
Paige Merrick recorded her fifth double-double in seven games this season, she had 36 assists, 10 digs and also added four service aces.
Maria Coelho led the Lady Tigers with 17 kills,
Kaite Johnson had 13 kills and
Sonia Flendrich had her first double-digit kill performance with 11 kills and zero errors for a .524 attacking percentage.
Jaimie Thompson led the team with 20 digs.
In the first set of the morning RMU jumped out to a 4-1 lead before the Lady Tigers responded with a 7-2 run in taking an 8-6 lead. Kills by Johnson and Coelho sparked the run for Campbellsville. With the set tied at 14-14, Coelho sparked an 11-6 Lady Tiger run to put the Eagles away 25-20.
After falling in the second set to Robert Morris the Lady Tigers bounced back with a 9-2 start in the third set. RMU pulled to within two on several occasions, the last coming at 14-12. Coelho again sparked the Lady Tiger 11-6 run to finish the set with 25-18 victory and 2-1 lead.
In the fourth set the Lady Tigers began with a kill by Flendrich followed by one of Merrick's four aces to jump out to an 8-1 lead. The Eagles were forced to call a timeout. Campbellsville had multiple seven-point leads, first at 8-1 then at 9-2 and again at 17-10 and 18-11. RMU finished the set on a 12-7 run but the Lady Tigers held them off for the 25-23 victory and 3-1 win.
The Lady Tigers are now 14-5 in sets decided by five points or fewer and 6-0 in matches decided in four sets.
Five different Lady Tigers have recorded at least one match with double digit kills this season.
CU finishes up at the Siena Heights Invitational this afternoon with a 1 p.m. match against Huntington University.
