RIO GRANDE, Ohio —
Rachel McWilliams put Campbellsville women's soccer ahead in the 65
thsecond and
Claudia Eckstein scored an insurance goal with 12 minutes left in regulation to push the Lady Tigers to a 3-1 road win at Rio Grande on Wednesday night.
McWilliams uncorked the scoreless tie just after the one-minute mark for her first goal of the year as she started the domination. Campbellsville (5-1) out-shot Rio Grande (2-3) 28-14 and CU had half of its shots on goal – 14.
Chase Davis knotted the match up at one-all in the 21
stminute but that lead didn't last long. After a corner kick by McWilliams, the RedStorm fell victim to an own-goal to put Campbellsville ahead, 2-1.
At the break, goalkeeper
Katelyn Young, who has started the last three matches, recorded two saves while her countered part, Kelsie Lee, had 10. The start for Lee was the first goal this season, as Andrea Vera, who had started the first four games, missed tonight's contest.
The second half was a little less exciting as the lone score came from Eckstein in the 79
thminute – also her first goal of the year – as
Kiersten Clukey picked up the assist.
Young finished her day with six saves as she shut out the RedStorm in the second half. Lee finished with 14 stops in goal for Rio Grande.
Campbellsville has now started the season 5-1, which is the best start since the Lady Tigers went 15-0 to begin the 2015 season. The 5-1 start is the second-best in program history.
The Lady Tigers get back in action this weekend as Mount Vernon Nazarene University comes to Tiger Town on Saturday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
