Lady Tiger soccer bounces back with 1-0 win over Aquinas on Sunday afternoon

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – A Lakin Walls header found the back of the net in 54th minute of action on Sunday afternoon and the Lady Tiger defense posted its third shutout in four contests this season. Campbellsville improved to 3-1 on the season and Aquinas College fell to 1-2 following the 1-0 contest.

The first half got off to inauspicious start for the Lady Tigers as they were called for a yellow card just 12 seconds into the match. Aquinas was able to take three shots in the opening two minutes but Katelyn Young defended the net brilliantly all afternoon. Her first save came just 13 seconds into action and she would record three more later in the first half.

Aquinas took six shots in the opening 20 minutes of the game before the Lady Tigers were able to get a shot but Young was there to contest the four of them that were on frame. Around the 15th minute the Lady Tigers started to gain some offensive possession and at the 19:57 mark Rachel McWilliams put her foot into a shot that went wide. The rest of the half was a lot of good defense from both teams as they went into the intermission tied at 0-0.

A foul by Aquinas just outside of the box set up the Lady Tigers with a free kick opportunity to open the second half. McWilliams took the kick and sent it into the crowd, Molly Hall header found Walls who headed it past an out of place Saints goalkeeper giving the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead. That one goal would be all the Lady Tigers needed this afternoon.

The Lady Tigers were able to find a lot of opportunities in the second half as they took eight shots to only three in the first half. Young tallied her first win in goal this season as she played the full 90 minutes and gathered nine saves.

Campbellsville is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Brescia on Wednesday, September 8 for an 8 p.m. showdown.
