CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Lady Tiger volleyball will return to the road after two-straight home matches to take on the 18
th ranked Georgetown College Tigers.
GU will host Campbellsville at 7 p.m. ET with the junior varsity game scheduled for 5 p.m.
CU is riding the high of two-straight wins in their first two matches at the Powell Athletic Center last Thursday against Life and last Friday against University of the Cumberlands.
Georgetown College comes into the match as the 18
th ranked team in NAIA suffering only one loss on the season so far. Last week, the Tigers earned their third and fourth MSC wins of the season over the same teams Campbellsville earned wins over, Life and University of the Cumberlands.
Last Thursday was a smooth performance for the Lady Tigers, winning three sets to none behind the play of
Maria Coelho who was the only CU player with double-digit kills and added four blocks. Campbellsville won the sets against the Running Eagles 25-17, 25-20 and 25-18.
Friday night's match was more tightly contested as CU trailed by a set twice in the match. Along with Coelho (16), Katie Johnson (16) and
Sonia Flendrich (13) had double-digit kills and more kills than any Patriots attacker. After the first four sets went back and forth, the Lady Tigers won the first five points of the fifth set, like they did in the fourth, to eventually win the deciding set 15-12.
SERIES HISTORY:
- Campbellsville and Georgetown College are meeting for the 37th time in program history.
- GU leads the series 31-6 over the 13-year history of the matchup.
- CU has the most recent win in the series, earing a Mid-South Conference Tournament win over Georgetown last year by a score of 3-1.
- CU and GC's first meeting came in 2005 with Georgetown winning 3-0.
- Last season, GC won both regular season matchup (3-0, 3-2) with the last CU regular season victory coming in 2011 when they won 3-2 on Sept. 20.
TIGER CLAWZ:
- For the first time in her career, Campbellsville's Jaimie Thompson is named the Mid-South Conference Defender of the Week. Thompson, a junior defensive specialist from Owensboro, Ky., recorded 55 digs in three matches last week to lead CU to a 2-1 record. Against University of the Cumberlands on Friday night, Thompson tallied a career-high 25 digs in the five-set victory, while registering 21 against Life University the night before.
- The Lady Tigers have won nine of their last 11 matches, including three MSC wins over Pikeville (3-0), Shawnee State (3-1), Life (3-0) and Cumberlands (3-2).
- The two losses in this stretch have come to Asbury University on Sept. 7 (3-1) and Lindsey Wilson on Sept. 18 (3-0).
- Freshman Paige Merrick has been named MSC Setter of the Week twice and ranks No. 21 in the country with 10 assists per set. In addition, Merrick's 60 assists vs. Shawnee State (Sept. 11) are a new career-high and are the most by any setter in the MSC this year.
- Offensively, Maria Coelho and Kaite Johnson – a pair of seniors – lead CU's attack. Coelho leads CU with 168 kills, while Johnson has 151.
- Coelho ranks eighth on the all-time career list for kills with 1,206.
- CU also ranks 27th in the country by averaging 2.0 service aces for game.
