Mahoney wins first tournament; Tigers punch their ticket to NCCAA National Championship

COHUTTA, Ga. — For the second straight season, Campbellsville University men's golf won the National Christian College Athletic Association Mid-East Regional Championship.

The Tigers out-lasted the six-team field by 38 strokes as CU finished with a team score of 617 compared to Bluefield College's 655. With the win, the Tigers earn their eighth NCCAA National Championship appearance in program history, which will take place at The Conservatory Course in Palm Coast, Fla. Oct. 22-24.

In addition, sophomore Austin Mahoney won his first collegiate tournament after firing an eight-over 152. Mahoney was tied for second after the first round but jumped the leaderboard and out-lasted teammate Justin Warman and Hiwassee's Peyton Holland by one position. Holland led after the opening round by four strokes but Mahoney's second round 74 won by one shot.

The team title is the first for the Tigers this season, after a runner-up finish at the Lindsey Wilson Classic and sixth place at the Georgetown College Invitational.

Individually, the Tigers had all five golfers in the Top 8 and four earned All-Tournament honors. Warman was one shot behind with a 78-75 (153) and finished tied for second. Landon Connor fired 79-76 (155) and placed solo fourth, while fellow freshman Seth Bohl was tied for fifth with scores of 81-76 (157).

Jon Brewington also finished in the Top 8 with scored of 81-79 but was left off the All-Tournament Team by the NCCAA (regional chair wanted to spread the honors out). He shot 81-79 (160).

In the team standings, CU shot a tourney low of 301 on Tuesday's second round, while Oakland City and Alice Lloyd moved up one position to finish tied for second and fourth, respectively. Kentucky Christian finished fifth, while Johnson University was sixth.

The Tigers will now have a quick turnaround and travel to the Mid-South Conference Fall Invitational this weekend at Pikeville's Stonecrest Golf Club. The two-day tournament is scheduled to start on Saturday, Sept. 29 and finish on Sunday, Sept. 30.
