Zanders rushes for back-to-back 100-yard games to lead Campbellsville past KCU, 35-27

GRAYSON, Ky. — Redshirt freshman Ormoni Zanders rushed for his second consecutive 100-yard game and quarterback Josh Davis threw for three touchdowns to lead Campbellsville to a 35-27 win over Kentucky Christian.

Zanders becomes the first Tiger since Wayne Coffey in 2011 to rush for consecutive 100-yard games as he went for 127 on the ground on 19 attempts. Davis was 21-of-35 for 228 yards, while Kendon Young caught six passes for 72 yards and two of the three TDs from his fellow southpaw.

Edwin Ford, Jr. had a career day on the defensive side with 13 tackles to match Darius Moore's mark. Moore also led CU with 1.5 tackles for loss, while Marquis Cain had a career-high five pass break ups in the secondary.

The win for the Tigers in Grayson is the second in the series, as CU defeated KCU 15-14 in the 2012 matchup when Casey Clarke set the single-game record with five field goals.

Today started with the Knights (1-5, 0-1 MSC) taking a 7-0 lead after their longest drive of the afternoon – an 11-play 48-yard scoring drive capped by the first of two Javin Harrison short-yard rushes.

But Campbellsville (2-3, 1-0 MSC) answered right back with two straight scores. Cain picked off Jug Smith for his first interception of the year and CU marched down the field, capped by Davis hitting Jordan Brown on a 21-yard pass tying the game at 7-all.

Then Campbellsville's special teams stepped up big time to give the Tigers a little momentum.

After a low snap on a punt for KCU, Brayden Russell blocked the kick and freshman Devonte Cubit recovered in the end zone for his first-career score to put CU ahead, 14-7.

After Harrison punched it in from five yards out on the next KCU drive to start the second quarter, neither team would find the end zone again until the three second mark of the half. Noah Bicksler nailed a 29-yarder to end the half giving CU a 17-14 lead at the break.

Coming out of halftime, Bicksler kicked his second field goal – a 33-yarder to put CU ahead, 20-14. Then just one minute later, Campbellsville took advantage of another turnover and it turned into the Josh Davis and Kendon Young show.

After the CU field goal, Marquis Cain laid a lickin' on Anton Wheeler to force a fumble and teammate Darius Moore returned 17 yards to set up a quick score. Young hauled in a 24-yard one-handed grab in the back of the end zone for his first touchdown to put CU ahead, 27-14.

The Knights answered right back and had an opportunity to make a game of it at the end. De'Anta Sipp found a lane and rushed 26-yards to cut the lead back to six, 27-21. But it was Young and Davis connecting again – this time for a 16-yard pass to put CU ahead, 33-21. The Tigers, wanting to go ahead by two scores, went for their first two-point conversion of the season and Davis found Brown for the try.

In the fourth quarter, the Josh DavisKendon Young Show turned into the Jug Smith – Devon McCoy Show. The two connected six times and went the full 76 yards to cut Campbellsville's lead to eight, 35-27.

The Tigers then stepped up their defense with 5:24 left and KCU getting the ball back to force the Knights' seventh punt of the day. Campbellsville got the ball back with 3:56 left trying to run the clock out and was able to end the day with an eight-play drive and the Victory Formation for QB Josh Davis

Campbellsville's schedule doesn't get any easier, as the Tigers have three of their next four games against Top 15 opponents. CU returns to Finley Stadium next weekend as the Tigers welcome No. 14 Bethel University to town for Homecoming 2018. Bethel comes in after winning 50-49 over No. 9 Georgetown College in four overtimes on Saturday.
