Union takes advantage of Tiger mistakes to earn first win over CU since early 2000s

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A night that saw six yellow cards and a match that was almost three hours, the Union College Bulldogs came to Tiger Town and stole a win away from Tiger soccer on Wednesday night, 3-2.

The Tigers have now lost two in a row, both by one-goal deficits, and fall to 1-2 on the year while Union defeats Campbellsville for the first time since the two competed in the Mid-South Conference together in the early 2000s.

Tonight, it was the Bulldogs that scored in the 34thsecond and that was just how Campbellsville's night went. The Tigers had multiple shots ding off the post or cross bar but could only find the back of the net during play one time – the other was a PK by Nathan Heath

After Kenny Brown hit Edwin Garcia in the first minute to put Union ahead, 1-0, the Tigers answered in the 24th. Off a free kick, Sergio Cristaldo booted a perfect ball in the box and Connor Grant finished for his first-career score.

That's where the game would go at the halftime break but the second half, well it took almost an hour and a half to play. With five yellow cards given out and play getting physical, the Bulldogs took advantage of costly Campbellsville mistakes.

In the 54th, Brown found Garcia once more after a Campbellsville yellow card to put the Bulldogs back ahead, 2-1. Union then extended its lead to 3-1 after another defensive mishap. Breno Scomparim booted a ball over top and past the defense to find Jezreel Soares, who finished on an open net.

Campbellsville rallied back and had three attempts in the final 15 minutes, but Pedro Moreira came up clutch as Union's goalkeeper. He finished with five saves on the night but none bigger than a Grant attempt in the 73rdand Troy Walters shot in the 84th

In the 85th, the Tigers did cut the deficit to one. Nathan Heath picked up his third goal of the year after a hand-ball in the box by Union leading to a penalty kick.

The Tigers had two more chances to find the equalizer in the final four minutes but Tom Edge and missed a pair of opportunities late.

Overall, the Tigers once again out-shot their opponent, 21-13 but seven of the 13 were on frame for Union. Only 7-of-21 were on goal for the Tigers.

Luis Ramirez finished the night allowing three goals and tallied four saves. He gave way to Owen Stott in the final 14:14 and Stott did not face a shot attempt.

The Tigers will now welcome Kentucky Christian University into Tiger Town on Friday night as CU looks to get back in the win column with kickoff at 7 p.m. ET.
