LEBANON, Tenn. – On a night where the Lady Tigers were looking for a go-to scorer,
Savannah Gregory answered the bell in a big way with a career-high 25 points. Campbellsville took about three quarters to pull away but ended up winning by a final of 67-42 over Cumberland University Thursday night.
Gregory was the game's high scorer and only consistent offense for the Lady Tigers, going 9-for-16 from the field and 6-for-9 from distance. The redshirt sophomore from nearby Scottsville, Ky. was the only player on either side to hit more than one three-pointers in the whole game.
Gregory also recorded a team-high five steals as the Lady Tigers took the ball away from the Phoenix a total of 14 times in the game. Cumberland turned the ball over 26 times in the game that led to 15 Campbellsville points off of those turnovers.
The Lady Tigers struggled from the field all game that helped keep the Phoenix in the game in the first half as Campbellsville led 33-24 at halftime. Cumberland's zone defense collapsed on Campbellsville's forwards and the open Lady Tiger guards were unable to knock down open looks, going just 3-for-14 in the first half from deep.
Campbellsville was also marred with foul trouble in the front court as
Jordan Doram picked up three fouls in the first half as well as
Madison Stewart and
Madison Faulkner each picking up two in the first 20 minutes.
The third quarter was key for the Lady Tigers as they went on a long 8-0 run that least almost seven minutes of the period to push their lead to 41-27. Gregory got hot in the third from three-point land with nine points all from behind the arc after she scored 10 in all of the first half.
Though the shots weren't always falling, other members of the Lady Tiger lineup contributed in other key categories.
Caitlin Hall was close to her season average in assists with six on the night and
Madison Faulkner led the way for Campbellsville with eight rebounds.
Madison Stewart stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds and four assists. Stewart came up three points short of reaching the 1,000-point milestone as she is looking to become the second Lady Tiger this season to reach that mark after
Jordan Doram did earlier this season.
The Lady Tigers now move to 8-0 in Mid-South Conference play for the first time since the 2010-11 season as they will travel to Columbia, Ky. on Saturday to face rival Lindsey Wilson.
