CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – It was a game of two halves for the Campbellsville University football team Saturday night at Finley Stadium as Thomas More University was able to edge out a 31-28 win over the Tigers.
CU went scoreless in the second half as there was only one score in the final 30 minutes of play with the Saints hitting a 33-yard field goal from Alexander Haley with three minutes left in the third quarter.
The Tigers struggled on offense in the second half, only picking up three first downs and gaining 77 yards of total offense after a strong first half performance from the offense.
Quarterback
Talaileva Sufia finished with a career-high in passing yards on the night with 297 yard on 13-of-30 passing with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Two of the three interceptions came on the final two possessions for the Tigers as Sufia was picked off with 3:03 left to go then again with five seconds left deep in their own territory as the Saints iced the game on that defensive play.
TMU's offensive attack was fairly balanced with quarterback Justin Post went 18-for-36 for 230 yards and three touchdowns. The Saints running attack gained 268 yards behind a 155 yard performance from Monalo Caldwell as the running back also added a touchdown.
That run game helped the Saints control the ball, especially in the second half as they finished the game with a time of possession of 34:58 with over 18 of those minutes coming in the second half. It was the first game of the season that CU had the ball for less game time than their opponent as the Tigers only had the ball for a total of 25:02 in the game.
It was a first half that saw Thomas More come out swinging but the Tigers answered every shot with their own counter shot with the teams heading into halftime tied at 28-28.
CU's passing game was on the money in the first half as Sufia went 9-for-14 in the half for 251 yards, already a season-high, and all four touchdowns, one on the ground and three in the air. Sufia completed four passes to
Kendon Young for 140 yards and a touchdown, with every catch going for over 15 yards.
Sufia also used the deep ball to
Blake Baker in the half to set up the quarterback sneak on the first score for Campbellsville in the game then a 64-yarder for a touchdown to tie the game at 14-14 early in the second quarter.
Both touchdowns were setup by Thomas More turnovers after a punt that bounced off of a Saints player was recovered by CU then a pass by Post was bobbled and intercepted by
Marcus McCants for his first pick of the season.
That was about the only mistake by Post in the half as he finished with 198 yards and three touchdowns in the half after he hit receiver Da'Marco Canty for a pair of scores and running back Justin Durham for another on a screen pass.
Down a touchdown for the third time in the game at 21-14, Campbellsville directly answered a TMU score for the first time in the game as Sufia hit tight end
Zachary Cole for an 18-yard pass, set up earlier in the drive by a 68-yard catch and run by Young.
After yet another Saints touchdown, it was Sufia to Young once again for a 43-yard pass after a 25 yarder earlier in the drive to tie the score at 28-28. Young had a total of 68 yards of offense for CU in the 69-yard drive.
Young only caught two more passes in the second half to finish with 167 receiving yards for the game on six catches.
Campbellsville will be at home next week for Homecoming as they welcome the University of Pikeville to Finley Stadium for a 2 p.m. ET kickoff.
