WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – It was not the result the Campbellsville University women's soccer team was looking to get after returning to game action for the first time in 10 days as University of the Cumberlands took the match 3-1 Wednesday evening.
All of the scoring came in the second half as the Patriots spaced out all three of their goals to take a 3-0 advantage with nine minutes left in the game. Their first came in the 49
th minute after a steal in their own offensive half of the field as Naira Lopez finished off the goal on a pass from Anihoa Camara, who got the initial steal.
The next two goals came about 20 minutes apart in the 61
st and 81
st minutes with Camara scoring on a header from Shara Randez then Lopez and Emily Willoughby feeding Lauren Navajas on a counter-attack to extend the lead to three.
The Lady Tigers' goal came with just under three minutes left to play as
Sangmin Cha took a corner kick that was ruled to go untouched into goal inside the far post after bouncing through a crowd of bodies.
It was a game that the Patriots controlled for most of the contest, finishing with 22 shots compared to just six for Campbellsville. The first half was just about as lopsided with UC firing 10 shots to just one for CU but Lady Tiger goalkeeper
Katelyn Young was able to make the necessary saves to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Cumberlands was the more physical of the two teams in the match, pressuring defensively in any part of the field. Some of that physicality resulted in the Patriots committing 10 more fouls than Campbellsville with the game finishing at 15-5 in fouls.
The women's soccer team will look to bounce back this Saturday when they get back on the road for a game in Marietta, Ga. against Life University.
