Fighting Tiger football back home for MSC Bluegrass showdown against Georgetown College

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University football team returns home to Finley Stadium this Saturday night at 7 p.m. ET to host Georgetown College.

The action will be broadcast live on television on WLCU-TV, Comcast channel 10, as well as online on the CU Sports Network and on the radio on 88.7 The Tiger with Jim Freeman and Matt Payton on the call.

TIGER CLAWZ
  • In last Saturday's game, the Tigers were led by a career night from sophomore running back David Richardson as he went off for 121 yards on the ground and three touchdown, each a career-high.
  • CU scored the first touchdown of the game on their first drive, but SEU went into the half up 24-7 after scoring 24-straight points. The Tigers put up a fight in the third quarter, bringing the score within a possession twice at 27-21 and 34-27 but the Fire were able to finish the game off with 10-straight points to finish with their 44-27 win.
  • Defensively, Darius Moore and Marcus McCants led the team in tackling for the game with Moore finishing with 10 and McCants right behind him with nine. McCants also had a pair of pass break-ups on his way to being voted the MSC Bluegrass Defensive Player of the Week.
  • Through four games, Campbellsville is averaging 25.8 points per game and 388.8 yards of total offense. Defensively they are allowing 31.5 points per game with their opponents gaining only 367.2 total yards of offense per game. CU is also gaining more first downs per game than their opponents and rushing for about 60 more yards per game than they allow.

SERIES FACTS: LOOKING FOR A BREAKTHROUGH
  • These pair of Mid-South Conference Tigers have played each other in football every year since the inception of Campbellsville's football program in 1988 with Georgetown owning the majority of the success with a 24-5 overall record against CU.
  • Of those five wins for CU in the series history, four of them have come in Campbellsville with those wins coming in 1992, 1996, 2009, and 2014.
  • In the last match-up, GC earned a 31-8 win in Georgetown over Campbellsville as Georgetown scored 31 unanswered points before CU got their only score of the game in the fourth quarter. In that game, Georgetown QB Hunter Krause threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns as Krause is back for GC this season but will miss Saturday's game due to injury.
  • The last time CU earned a win over Georgetown in 2014, Campbellsville scored all 28 of their points in the first half and were able to hang on to a 28-24 win. Quarterback Jacob Russell had a big day at Finley Stadium throwing for 312 yards and three touchdowns with 127 of those yards going to receiver Trevon Chatman, who also caught a touchdown.

SCOUTING GEORGETOWN COLLEGE
  • The Tigers of Georgetown College will come into Finley Stadium with a 1-2 record after losses in their first two games to Kentucky Christian University and Southeastern University with their win coming in last week's game against St. Andrew's.
  • Both losses have come on the road as KCU edged out a 30-27 win over GC and SEU took it to the Tigers 54-15 in Lakeland.
  • Offensively, Georgetown relies heavily on the passing game, averaging 339.0 passing yards per game compared to just 68.7 rushing yards per game. Two quarterbacks have split time for GC with Hunter Krause getting the majority of the run with almost 700 yards and five touchdowns but has thrown all four of their interceptions this season.
  • On the defensive side of the ball, senior defensive back Starr Thompson is GC's leading tackler with 34 total tackles so far on the season adding an interception, pass break-up, forced fumble, and fumble recovery.

BACK-TO-BACK DEFENSIVE POTW
  • Monday afternoon, Tiger defensive back Marcus McCants was named the Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Southeastern last Saturday.
  • McCants finished the game with nine tackles, four solo and five assisted, with a half of a tackle for a loss and two pass break-ups.
  • With his win this Monday, McCants become the second-straight Tiger defender to earn the honor of Bluegrass Defensive Player of the Week after linebacker Darius Moore earned it after his performance at Union a week earlier.
  • Moore finished the Union game with 15 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss and a sack in the game for his second career MSC weekly honor.
  • Both McCants and Moore are the top-two on the defense in tackles on the season with Moore leading the way by a large margin at 43 tackles ahead of McCants who is second at 27 tackles.

RICHARDSON EMERGES AS FEATURE BACK
  • Through four games, the Campbellsville rushing attack has been the strongest part of their offense, averaging just under 200 rushing yards per game.
  • David Richardson leads the way for the Tigers with 340 total yards rushing so far and four touchdowns on the ground.
  • Most recently, Richardson had a career night rushing for 121 yards and three touchdowns in CU's loss to Southeastern University. Richardson scored the first three touchdowns of the game for the Tigers, helping them comeback to within a touchdown twice in the second half against the fire.
  • He has gone over 100 all-purpose yards and been the Tigers leading rusher in every game but one so far with each of those instances coming against Reinhardt University on Sept. 14.
  • On average, Richardson carries the ball about 14 times per game while adding about 3.5 receptions per game to be at 17.5 touches per game to lead the team.

TURNOVER TROUBLES
  • Turnovers have been one of the biggest issue for the Tigers so far in 2019, not only committing them but their inability to force turnovers on defense as well with their turnover margin at -8.
  • So far, Campbellsville's offense has turned it over nine times with five interceptions and four fumbles lost.
  • Defensively, CU opponents have only lost one fumble and that fumble came in the Tigers lone win of the season so far at Union College.
  • The Tigers lead in many stat categories against their opponents that normally indicate more favorable results such as time of possession, total offensive yardage, and first downs but the lack of takeaways combined with being a little too loose with the ball has hindered CU through four games.

LOOKING AHEAD
  • CU will be at home for the next two weeks of games starting with Thomas More University coming to Finley Stadium next Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
  • After that will be Homecoming for the Tigers when they host University of Pikeville for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Finley Stadium.
