BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A tough test at outset for the Campbellsville University women's volleyball ended up holding seed as the Lady Tigers defeated the No. 9 seed University of Pikeville Friday morning then fell in the Mid-South Conference quarterfinal to the top seed and NAIA No. 10 Lindsey Wilson College Friday evening.
In their 3-0 sweep of the Bears, the Lady Tigers took the sets by final scores of 25-12, 25-21, and 25-12 as CU had an advantage in the offensive categories of kills (39-25), aces (9-1), and hitting percentage (.283).
In the loss to Lindsey Wilson, CU trailed 2-0 in the match but brought it back with a third-set win, eventually dropping the fourth set to lose the match 25-11, 25-15, 18-25, and 25-16 to suffer elimination in the tournament.
Campbellsville's top attackers in each match were
Stela Velinova and
Yelyzaveta Sharkova as the pair combined for 42 kills between the two matches. Velinova finished as the team leader in kills in each contest with 13 against UPike and 12 against LWC. Sharkova backed her up with seven against the Bears then 10 against the Blue Raiders.
Setter
Paige Merrick had an extremely strong match against Pikeville with a double-double at 26 assists and 11 digs while also adding six kills on nine attacks for a .556 hitting percentage in the match.
MSC Libero of the Year,
Jaimie Thompson had double-digit digs in each match with 11 and 10 while adding seven assists in each match in her final two matches as the CU libero.
The tournament loss will end the 2019 season for the Lady Tigers as they finish with a 17-18 record after finishing the conference regular season as the eighth seed. CU expects to return all but three members of this season's roster in hopes that a year of experience for the relatively young team will bring them back stronger for 2020.
