Free throws are the difference in pull away win for the Tigers over Oakwood

COLUMBIA, Ky. — Leading by only one point with a little over two minutes left, Campbellsville men's basketball capitalized on the second technical foul by Oakwood University and scored eight straight points to run past the Ambassadors, 81-74.

The win moves No. 21 Campbellsville to 4-2 and 1-0 in the Lindsey Wilson Classic this weekend the Biggers Sports Center. The Tigers will play Missouri Baptist on Saturday night at 5 p.m. ET to close out The Classic.

On Friday night, though, it was Jacob King putting the Tigers on his back in the scoring column with a season-high 21 points. King joined Ronald Taylor by hitting 10-of-11 from the free throw line as Taylor dropped 12 points off the bench. David Simmons finished with 16 points and led CU with seven boards.

Campbellsville was able to push its lead to as large as 15 points after two Taiveyhon Mason free throws with 8:25 left and it looked like it could run away with the victory, but Oakwood (0-8) didn't back down.

After a Marquise Hudson jumper for Oakwood, it was Sam Weining skying-high for an offensive rebound and put-back at the 7:36 mark. That was the last field goal CU would make until the Ambassadors hurt themselves by taunting.

Oakwood converted on four consecutive trips and cut the lead to six points, 66-60, with 4:38 left. The Ambassadors cut the deficit to three after a made 3-pointer by DeSham Hotabah and then to one with a Talik Talton bucket. But it was the talking after the basket with 2:37 left that turned the entire game around.

King converted the two technical free throws and what was a one-put deficit for Oakwood would eventually turn into a nine-point lead for Campbellsville. After the freebies by King, Mason banked-in a 3-pointer and Taylor picked up an offensive board and put-back while being fouled. He hit the free throw to extend CU's lead to nine, 74-65, with 1:30 left.

Down the stretch, Taylor made four free throws, King drilled two and Mason hit one for the final seven Campbellsville points.

The difference was the free throw shooting as CU hit 30-of-40 (75%) and Oakwood was only 10-of-12 (83.3%). The Ambassadors out-rebounded CU, 39-31, and made five more field goals than the Tigers. Oakwood hit 28-of-59 (47%) and Campbellsville was 23-of-55 (42%) from the floor.
