Tiger basketball set to host post-Thanksgiving Classic facing Oakland City and Philander Smith

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Thanksgiving break will be a quick turnaround for Campbellsville University men's basketball as the Tigers only have 24 hours off before hosting the Campbellsville Classic on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29-30. 
 
The Tigers and University of the Cumberlands will both face Oakland City and Philander Smith throughout the two-day classic. 
 

Friday Schedule:
4 p.m. - Cumberlands vs. Philander Smith
6 p.m. Campbellsville vs. Oakland City
 

Saturday Schedule:
2 p.m. Cumberlands vs. Oakland City
4 p.m. Campbellsville vs. Philander Smith
 
The Campbellsville games will air on the CU Sports Network as Jordan Alves will fill-in for Matt Payton on WLCU-TV (Comcast 10), 88.7 The Tiger and CampbellsvilleTigers.com/watch. 
 

SCOUTING OAKLAND CITY:
  • Entering with a 1-6 record, the Oakland City Mighty Oaks have faced stiff competition to start.
  • Oakland City is coming off a loss at Southern Indiana - the previous school CU's David Simmons transferred in from - 121-58.
  • OCU has lost three-straight to Kentucky Wesleyan, Wilberforce and Southern Indiana.
  • Individually, Tyler Toopes is the leading scorer at 21.2 ppg. and hitting 50 percent from the 3-point line (14-of-28).
  • He's also second on the team in rebounding at 4.6 boards per game.
  • Head coach Lee Moore is in his first season.
SCOUTING PHILANDER SMITH:
  • The Panthers enter the Campbellsville Classic with a 3-5 record before playing Cumberlands on Friday night.
  • The Panthers boast a 1-3 record on the road and are playing their first neutral game of the season.
  • PSU is coming in winning two in a row over Fisk University and Texas A&M - Texarkana.
  • A common foe is Cumberland University as the Phoenix took down Philander Smith on Nov. 14, 73-56.
  • Todd Day, Sr. is in his second season after leading Philander Smith to a 16-13 record and finishing second in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
  • The Panthers reached the GCAC Championship game and Coach Day earned Coach of the Year honors.
  • Coach Day played at the University of Arkansas ('89-'92) and was a First-Team All-American.
  • Todd "T.J." Day, Jr. - the son of Coach Day - is the Panthers' assistant coach.
TIGERS HAVE HIT 3-POINT FG IN OVER 527 GAMES:
  • Dating back to the beginning of the 2003-2004 (Dakstats era), Campbellsville University men's basketball has hit a 3-pointer in 527 straight games. 
FOUR AVERAGING DOUBLE FIGURES: RONALD TAYLOR FINDING GROOVE:
  • Ronald Taylor has started to find his groove in the last two weekends. Taylor has averaged 16.2 ppg in the last four contests. 
  • He scored a then-career-high 21 points against Missouri Baptist on 9-of-16 shooting before one- upping that against IU Southeast with 23 points. 
SIMMONS PLAYS HERO:
  • David Simmons scored a career-high 27 points against IU Southeast last Friday night. 
  • He hit 12-of-15 from the floor and none were bigger than the final shots of regulation and overtime. 
  • Simmons picked up an offensive rebound and scored to tie the game in regulation and then hit a floater with 2 seconds remaining in OT to secure the comeback victory. 
  • Simmons has scored in double figures the last four games and six of the last seven. 
  • He leads the team by averaging 12.8 ppg.
