Fighting Tiger football to celebrate Senior Day with Saturday afternoon meeting with Cumberland

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. –  The Campbellsville University football team will return home to Finley Stadium for Senior Day against Cumberland University this Saturday afternoon for a 4 pm. ET kickoff.

The voice of Fighting Tiger football, Jim Freeman will be on the call from Finley Stadium with Daryl Peavler filling in on color commentary with Matt Payton on assignment with Lady Tiger basketball.

Saturday's football game will not be carried on the air of 88.7 The Tiger if women's basketball wins their game on Friday, making Saturday's contest for 1,000 wins in program history but the football game will be televised on WLCU-TV, Comcast 10, and online on the CU Sports Network.

TIGER CLAWZ
  • CU is immediately coming off of an idle week but prior to that, the Tigers fell to University of the Cumberlands 47-10 on Oct. 26 in Williamsburg for their fifth-straight loss.
  • The Patriots entered the second-quarter of that game with a 13-3 lead but the Tigers were on the fringe of making it a 13-10 game with the ball on the one-yard line before a fumbled turned the ball over to UC, where they drove 56 yards on two plays for a touchdown to make it a 20-3 game.
  • Offensively CU struggled to hit on any kind of big play with a 4.67 average yards per play as Campbellsville only finished with 308 total yards compared to 557 for the Patriots.
  • Defensively the Tigers finished with their second non-negative turnover margin in a game this season, turning the Patriots over twice with an interception and a sack/fumble that set-up the goal line opportunity that eventually CU fumbled back.
  • Campbellsville will be looking for their first home win of the season in their last attempt at home of the 2019 season. The last time CU did not earn a win at Finley Stadium came in the 2007 season where the Tigers went 0-10 on the season.

SERIES FACTS
  • Campbellsville and Cumberland have played each other every season since 1990 with the Tigers holding a 17-12 advantage in the all-time series as well as winning records both at home and on the road.
  • Campbellsville has won three of the last four meetings with the Phoenix only win in that stretch coming in 2016 when they topped Campbellsville 46-40 in Lebanon.
  • Last season, the Tigers pulled off a 31-21 win on the road behind a three touchdown performance from Kendon Young as he caught eight passes for 119 yards and those three scores while adding 27 yards on the ground. In that game, Campbellsville iced the game in the fourth quarter with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by Bjay Pelt with just over a minute to go in the game and Cumberland down 24-21.
  • The longest winning streak in series history for either team came early on in the series between 1993 to 1996 when the Phoenix won four-straight games with the only other winning streaks in series history being as long as three-games, showing how close this rivalry has been throughout the years.

SCOUTING CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY
  • The Phoenix are a team that rely heavily on a strong defensive effort as their offense only averages about two touchdowns per game at a 14.5 points per game average to this point in the season.
  • Cumberland has done a nice job this season limiting their turnovers on offense while forcing their fair share on the defensive end with a +2 turnover margin through eight games.
  • In terms of getting the ball into the end zone, the Phoenix have scored 12 of their 15 TDs from their rushing game, led by starting quarterback Joseph Rushin who has run for six scores and thrown for the only three in the passing game.
  • The CU rushing attack is powered by five rushers who have over 100 yards on the ground led by the 417 from Telvin Rucker, who averages 3.7 yards per carry and has four touchdowns this season.
  • Defensively, Cumberland is led by defensive back Tyler Tate who leads the team in total tackles (45) with a sack, interception, and three pass break-ups.

SENIOR DAY
  • Campbellsville football will recognize 14 student-athletes who will be playing in their final home game at Finley Stadium as well as recognizing three of their senior student staff members.
  • The players include Noah Bicksler, Trey Binder, Zack Bryson, Edwin Ford Jr., Austin Hash, Dante' Hollis, Parrish Howell Jr., Marcus McCants, Darius Moore, Garland Webb, Doug Wentworth, Dyron Williams, Chrishun Young, and Kendon Young.
  • Kendon Young highlights the group after multiple All-Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division First Team selections and an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention last season.
  • Every individual that will be honored prior to the game has either started or made significant contributions to the 2019 version of Fighting Tiger football.
  • Managers Benjamin Bird and Jaron Jackson as well as videographer Justin Davis will also be recognized for what they have provided to CU football as seniors.

A WEEK AWAY
  • The Tigers had a scheduled idle week last week after suffering their loss University of the Cumberlands on Oct. 26 as they look to come off of their week away rested and well prepared for Cumberland University.
  • The only other off week for the football team this season came after their season opener against Lindsey Wilson when their scheduled game against Southeastern University was moved to a different week to avoid Hurricane Dorian back on Sept. 7.
  • CU will look for more success coming off of this bye week compared to the last one when they faced Reinhardt in their home opener on Sept. 14 and were shutout 28-0 for their only shutout of the 2019 season.
  • Recent history for Campbellsville coming off of idle weeks has been a little hit and miss as the Tigers had gone .500 in the 2016 and 2017 seasons combined before dropping both of their 2018 games coming off of an off week.

LOOKING AHEAD
  • The Tigers will have one final game remaining on their 2019 schedule after this Saturday with a road game against Bethel University.
  • CU will travel to McKenzie, Tenn. to face off against the 4-5 Wildcats, who will be on the road this week to play University of Pikeville.
